and lock in... heres some lore for them
fuller's main theme and personality aspect is his care for his friends and how he views them as family, as well as his devotion to his interests and passions. 1 especially considered this with his birthday. making him a leo. this deep connection to familial aspects is probably because of his lack of a family in his parents, with no real "role models" (eventually manifesting in some of his delinquency in school). but this need to have people to love and love him (in kava and ian most) makes him a bit too chalant for most people. in school and such he tried to act cool, act disconnected, but he would get very deeply emotionally entwined in his relationships and being LIKED for once. deep down this kindness is actually just a facade for insecurity, which is soothed by the right people but making him extremely codependent
1an's main theme is his devotion to work. he'll spend so long working, forgetting to move from his desk chair and eat, see the sunlight (fuller helps with this a great deal by being a massive nag.) he does love his work, deep in music files ect, but he genuinely wants to put out a good product. even though his childhood and home life was amazing, to other people he views himself vaugely as a product. he is what he can give, a clean house, a good meal, a finished job well done. so he works. (also he genuinely does... forget.)
kava's main theme is her huge personality. loud, fun, lots of friends. but she didnt start that way. after moving to her new center city schoo lafter moving in with her aunt, she was odd and new. so she worked hard, extremely hard, to be popular. by the time she was done, everyone really did know her. but in the modern day, she is the loud one to the other two. she's tired most of the time. tired, drunk, or faking it are her two main moods while at home. any time her phone rings, she responds in a happy voice. she really is an interesting person, but she really is tired from work. she needs a break. and yet the kava everyone knows is who they expect
The first character that I started this universe on was Fuller. Apt. 5 is the fake universe that Fuller, Ian, and Kava exist in. It would be a sitcom airing on TV in the modern day, but Apt. 5 takes place in 2017.
Season One Description:
Fuller and Ian rent the apartment on the fifth floor of Stellar Apartments, a less than stellar accommodation in downtown Detroit. Follow Fuller on his workdays at Bizzcorp, the antics of the apartment building, and the budding intrapersonal relations between him and his newfound roommate Ian.
Season Two Description:
Someone new joins our team of two? Riding home one day, meet Kava! Follow our newfound friend as she realises that… she’s found someone more chaotic than her for once? Adding this to the mix, we go further into what life is like on the other floors… and how we got to be here.
Fuller Fukaga: https://pin.it/4l0gIjHtG
Height: 5.10
Weight: 174 lb
Pronouns: He/Him
Birthday: August 7th, 1999 (Leo)
Nationality: His parents immigrated from the Philippines
Fuller is the original main character of the Apt. 5 universe. He’s rather outgoing as opposed to Ian. He works a nearly dead end job most days a week at Bizcorp so he’s often in his work outfit or whatever he throws on. At home, his actual hobbies include playing on his ancient xbox, getting what sleep he can, and hanging out with Kava and his boyfriend (Ian). He also likes bugging Ian to listen to whatever he's currently working on.
Most of his young childhood was spent around his mom, who was a rather oppressive force in his life. She wanted him to be more like his cousins, a doctor or a lawyer and less of the general mess that he is in reality. She was really bipolar, switching between cold and not caring, thinking that he can ruin his own life, and actively seeking out ways to “prove” to people that he really is a bad person. His dad was passive and inactive. She was never physically abusive, but when she went on a tangent she was more than verbally. His only escape was leaving every day for school, before returning to a house charged with energy, or forebodingly quiet. In school, he ended up being more rebellious and as time went on he started dying his hair, he just stopped… trying. Moving out as soon as possible, he surfed the web until he found a desperate post- “roommate wanted”
Settling into his life on the fifth floor, at first him and Ian clash. He’s a mess. He’s always gone. He barely eats. He comes home late, grimy from the bus ride and goes to bed without showering. But this fondness eventually builds. Ian has this tendency to just.. Make his life easier, just because he cares. Out of the friend group, Fuller is the funny one. He’s chaotic. But he also cares for everyone else like nobody else, he’s the glue. He’s the passion.
Trivia:
His favorite holiday is Christmas
He always tries shaving his facial hair, and it pops back the next day
Any type of music that’s loud, he likes it
Regularly watches actual comedy specials
Likes 2000s games (Uncharted, resident evil) and soulsborne
Knows an infinite amount of random things, but can’t remember important stuff
Comes home with little snacks that he know Ian likes sometimes
Had a DS lite as a kid that his dad bought
Has cracks in his glasses or they're just plain broken because his prescription is EXPENSIVE
Ian Leton: https://pin.it/3nrX2R3Tb
Age: 19
Height: 6.2
Weight: 156 lb
Pronouns: He/Him
Birthday: January 2nd, 1999 (Capricorn)
Nationality: Canadian/American
Ian is the second character that I invented for Apt. 5. He’s a lot quieter, and has a strong work ethic. Most nights you'll find him glued to his laptop, as he works as a mildly acclaimed producer for some smaller bands. His joys include caring for others, which is his love language, listening to literally any type of music, watching anime, and engaging in online discourse. His room is perfectly clean and declared a “Fuller-free Zone”. He takes care of a lot of the chores at home, heading out for laundry or shopping. His income is definitely higher of the two.
Ian’s parents are actually very nice people. He was a rather goody-two shoes as a kid, perfect grades, perfect exterior. Into his later school years, he fell in with some different types of people, experiencing the life of parties, girls (though none of this felt… right) , and getting high to escape his feelings. His grades stayed up, and nobody noticed, only noticing how his hair was getting rather long. Once and a while he still bums a smoke of the neighbors.
In the first years of the apartment, he’s rather irritated with this new guy. He had posted online for a roommate just to get someone to split rent, not to talk to him when he’s trying to work, and stay up too late blasting music. But he eventually warms up, realising that… he’s never felt this way before. Is this what people call love? Ian is the quiet one. The contemplative one, the one that says “guys, is this really a good idea?” But he gives in anyway.
Trivia:
His favorite holiday is New Year’s
Most of the appliances in the apartment belong to him
He still doesn't know Fuller dyes his hair (end of series)
His entire family just burns at the beach, lobster red
He’s listened to the weirdest, most obscure thing ever. He likes anything that remotely (and doesn't) count as music
His parents comment every time he visits on how tall he’s gotten
Unironically drinks straight water
He doesn't beat the furry allegations
Kava Yang: https://pin.it/4wQbiNRjV
Age: 19
Height: 5.11
Weight: 145 lb
Pronouns: She/Her
Birthday: May 19, 1999 (Aries)
Nationality: Korean/American
Kava is the third character that I made for the show. She’s loud, but in a different font. She gossips, goes out with her friends. She’s the third person in the group, but not the third wheel. Working as a teen model, she’s out of town a lot. But when she’s in town, she lives on the fifth floor. She has her own key, her laundry ends up in their wash. She enjoys winning, beating Fuller at literally anything with her competitive spirit, and lounging around outside. Especially on the fire escape at her apartment that she’s not supposed to be on.
As a very (very) young child, she moved to live with her aunt, after the death of her mother. She was born prematurely, which led to complications. Her father was so stricken by grief that he continued him and his wife’s journey across the world, disappearing from her life to god knows where. The only mark on her life is a box of letters addressed to Kava for moments in her life, and their rings.
In school, she was a queen. Everyone knew her name, her reputation. That was, until she had to move to the city with her aunt to chase a business oppritunity and she had to start over. Now, her aunt owns a hair salon that she generously lets her live on the upper floor of, despite Kava leaving hair straightener burns on the counter and nail polish in the rug.
Seeing some guy with orange hair on the bus one day (she’s introduced in season 2), she walks up to him and starts up a conversation. Phone numbers are traded, plans are made, and before they knew it she was starting up conversation with the neighbors and inviting herself in. Kava is the party. She’s the sarcastic one, the girl that knows how to fix anything and always keeps a conversation going.
Trivia:
Her favorite holiday is Christmas
A cloud of bath and body works perfume follows her everywhere
She’s actually allergic to almonds
Her fridge is full of leftovers her aunt makes her take
Keeps a hello kitty cd player from her childhood in her bedroom
Owns (and wears) Juicy Couture
The aunties in the shop absolutely adore her
Unironically watches sitcoms like big bang theory
Loves cherry flavoured anything, cherry coke especially
Signature scent is raspberries and coconut (mainly coconut)
Loves spicy food
The Neighbors:
Apartment 1: The Landlord (Mr. N)
Mr. N is the landlord of Stellar Apartments. He’s older, balding, and overweight. He has a gruff mannerism about him and a military past if you believe the bumper stickers on his ancient sedan. The only way to reach him is by landline, and even then he barely picks up. You can hear news blaring when you walk past the front doors. He hires a janitorial staff to clean all the common areas, but beyond that he barely touches management duties except collecting rent and avoiding the inspectors
Apartment 2: Vacant
Mr. N’s ex wife Linda used to live here and left a few months before Ian and Fuller moved in on undisclosed premises. She was the one that left but most of what is shown is that she was worryingly younger…
This apartment might be filled in a later season, this isn't canon though.
Apartment 3: Lizzie and Bella
Lizzie is the mother, she’s an underpaid waitress at the Longwood Diner on the corner that the main characters sometimes frequent. She’s trying her best, but is rather stressed all the time. The only solace that she finds is in the upstairs neighbor, Dylan. Compared to her ex-boyfriend, he's sweet, he’s quiet, soft spoken. The other guy is out of the picture, not to be spoken of.
Bella is her daughter, her biggest love, her biggest expense. Lizzie works for her, for a better future. Bella is still just a kid, a little girl who likes bunny rabbits and pink.
Apartment 4: Trevor
Trevor is a college kid and Kava’s off again on again love interest. Once in a while to Mr. N’s chagrin he decides to invite some of his dirtbag friends over to drink and do god knows what. Always whining about his ex-girlfriend Cristal, who left him months ago. In the late, late future he cleans up and has a redemption arc, but for now he’s a teenage dirtbag that’s this close to failing out of college (on his parents' money).
Apartment 5: Fuller and Ian
See: Fuller Fukaga and Ian Leton
Apartment 6: Dylan
Dylan is a tired office worker that works deep in the finances of Bizzcorp. He’s really trying his best, and barely interacts with our main characters. You see him a lot in the background of lots of episodes, and featured in whole-apartment holiday specials. Ms. Lawrence has a bone to pick with him, though he’s the most inoffensive person to ever exist.
Apartment 7: Ms. Lawrence
Ms. Lawrence is the widowed sister of Mr. N. Fuller has this theory that she murdered her ex-husband. This is obviously untrue, but believed by gullible people. She’s a positively ancient school teacher that all of her students hate. She complains about the noise, the creaky elevator, basically anything. You can catch her lurking around the lobby to catch Jeopardy on weeknights on the tv down there.
Friends:
Nate:
One of Fuller’s work friends, introduced mainly as a plot element to ground episodes based at work. He works in the next cubicle over and is only roughly a year or two older than Fuller. He’s that one friend that hosts everything, and plans all the get-togethers. He does have this habit of getting shitfaced at parties and talking too much, but Fuller least of all people minds.
You can sort of depend on him, but not in a pinch. He occasionally will bring doughnuts for the office or a box of premade coffee, and is on the chopping block for not meeting deadlines. One of his bad traits is sidetracking Fuller to hell and back.
Not canon: Ian jealousy arc possible
Lindsay:
Kava’s friend, along with Gigi from her new school. They have this tendency to egg her on and bitch when they go out for their “girl’s nights”, but not necessarily in a bad way. Out of the two, Lindsay is the girl who knows a girl. She gets them into the parties, she knows the guy that makes fake IDs, and all the tea. But, coasting on Kava’s reputation has got her this far, and it will likely get her further.
Overall, she’s not a bad person. She responds the first time, she listens, she makes a plan and sticks to it.
Gigi:
Gigi is a lot more pliant, and emotional. She has this tendency to cry a lot, but she’s completely sincere. This sets her apart from many people. She’s always late, crashing into a room with her purse jingling with keychains and lipgloss messily applied. But like Lindsay, she’s down for anything and will always commit> She’s more down to earth and gives better advice, but isn't as “fun” (sober, at least) There’s a few photos circulating of her dancing on tabletops after a shot or five.
Have been thinking about this song a lot recently. Probably one of my favorite songs ever (from one of my favorite albums ever!) Brings a strong feeling of melancholy and nostalgia every time; the power of music!
Things you've said are taking their fucking toll
Eroded my confidence and almost took my soul
And while you list off the reasons
Why I deserve what I get
You'll have to watch me as I go
