NOTERIDAE MOMENT!!! I’ve always felt they look like if an acorn was a beetle… so tiny!!! So swimmy!! The burrowing water beetle! This one seems most likely to be Hydrocanthus, atripennis, which is a common species in Louisiana. I’ve always been hugely fond of these little guys… absurdly small beetles. So smooth.
I found this guy in a natural river in a conservation area on the shallow shoreline just swimming in little circles up and down the current, burrowing in the sand. If you have these around I HIGHLY recommend sitting and watching them swim in the shoreline. As always, I encourage corrections on my identification, if you know something I don’t please tell us!!
