Mer-Folk May Day one: Atargatis of Assyria
Regarded as one of the main gods of Ancient Assyria, she is the goddess of the moon and of fertility. After falling in love with a human shepherd, she gave birth to a daughter who, to her mother's dismay, was born human. In her despair, Atargatis threw herself into a lake in an attempt to drown herself. However, the gods believed her beauty too precious to waste, so she was turned into a mermaid. Thereby creating one of the oldest stories of mermaids to date.
