Aravo
RARITY: ★★★★☆ | THREAT: ★★★☆☆ SIZE: Macaw-sized.
HABITAT:
Anywhere with high trees to build their nests in. They are most commonly found in the woods, farmlands, the skies, and mountains, but it is not unheard of to find them in more populated areas with trees as well.
OVERVIEW:
Aravo are macaw-sized avian creatures with bright blue and gold coloring. While most would assume they have feathers from afar, those who get a close look would see they’re covered in scales, and have more bat-like wings than those found on birds. They’re highly intelligent (some would say sapient) and are almost always found in pairs with their mate, with whom they stay for life. Often, they will actively approach travelers and follow them around. They are well known for their raucous calls and tendency to mimic human speech. Due to their colors and size, many people who see aravo assume they’re escaped macaws from homes or zoos. Animal Control is getting tired of these reports.
ABILITIES:
Aravo feed on sound – the more people talk to them, the more they siphon away at the person’s voice, until the victim is unable to speak. They can also render of location utterly silent by devouring all the sound in the area, which can of course be a very alarming thing to stumble across.
Given their intelligence, they are also able to use stolen voices in creative and often dangerous ways.
Stolen sounds can be returned to the area and voices to their owners if the aravo is killed, which usually means that the beasts will fly away to avoid being caught once they’ve had their fill.
WEAKNESSES:
Killing an aravo will release all the sounds it has eaten, which can mean that a deafeningly loud blast of noise is going to be your prize. If you’re trying to get your own voice back, you might not end up with the right one: victims of aravo theft sometimes wind up with the voice of another person– or sometimes speak certain phrases, or laughter, in another person’s voice. This may be temporary or permanent.
Sirens, banshees, and other species with supernatural voices are immune.
They can be killed through normal means.
