Filling out the court record after convicting him of theft, Magistrate Hawkshaw asked him his nationality. Mike, hesitated, and finally ventured ‘European’. ‘That’s no good, I must have the country,’ his worship said. ‘Well,’ Mike said,’ when I was born it was Austria; when I left for Canada, it was Czecho-Slovakia; now...(with a helpless gesture), I don’t know what it it is.’ His worship entered him as Czech.
