Yes, these are the ripe fruits of Arbutus unedo, known as "koumara" in Greek. Yummy!!  Arbutus unedo's fruits have a high content of sugars (40%), and antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin C, beta-carotene, niacin, tocopherols, and organic acids that are precursors to omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (nearly 9%).  They are edible fresh, but that is an uncommon consumption, especially because the mature fruit tends to bruise very easily, making transportation difficult. They are used mostly for jam, marmalades, yogurt and alcoholic beverages, such as the Portuguese medronho, a type of strong brandy.  Many regions of Albania prepare the traditional drink rakia from the fruits of the plant (mare or kocimare in Albanian), hence comes the name of the drink "raki kocimareje".  Hey, make a crumble cake too! Kıbrıs Beşparmak Dağları’nın eteğinde, kimseciklerin olmadığı ormanlık bir yokuştan, terkedilmiş Ermeni Manastırı’na doğru aşağı inerken “hayırlısı” diyerek ağzıma attığım ve bemi öldürmeyen 😄 müthiş meyve. Yine de siz doğada karşılaşıp tanımadığınız kırmızı renkte hiçbir şeyi yemeyin. (Alerji testi için sol el bileğiniz iç kısmında deneme de yapabilirsiniz. Reaksiyon gösterirseniz asla yemeyin.) Alevkayası, Ermeni Manastırı Parkuru, Beşparmak Dağları, Kıbrıs #kocayemiş (#arbutusunedo ), fundagiller (#ericaceae ) familyasından meyveleri yenen bir çalı türü. Gençken tüylü olan kızılımsı kahverengi dallar üzerindeki yapraklar tüysüz, üst yüzü parlak yeşil, alt yüzü daha açık yeşil, kenarları testere dişli, uçları sivri ve derimsi bir ayaya sahiptir. Çiçekler beyaz renkli, uç kısımları yeşilimsi, salkım durumları halinde toplanmışlardır. Meyveleri küre biçiminde, 1–2 cm çapında, yüzeyi pürtüklü, önceleri yeşilimsi, olgunlukta ateş kırmızısı veya portakal rengindedir. 4-5 tohumlu etli bir meyvesi vardır. Meyveleri etli, ama çekirdekli bulunmaktadır, likör ve çeşitli içeceklerin yapımında da kullanılabilmektedir. Meyveleri toplanmazsa 1 sene boyunca bitki yeni meyveler verene kadar dalında kalabilmektedir. Bu özelliği ile kamkat ağacına benzemektedir.
