Soldiers Don’t Got to Hell || Drabble
He’d lost track of how many months he’d been orbiting the Earth up in his inherited satellite. Three? Four? It didn’t really matter at this point. Nick Fury had set his plan into motion several years earlier, and here he was barely able to tread water. James ran his fingers through his hair and sunk down in his chair. He needed a drink, several packs of cigarettes and the strategic mastery of Steve Rogers.
“Fuck,” the word was saturated with frustration combined with anxiety he’d never admit to and depression he was too quick to give into.
The soldier let out a long sigh as he picked up the pack on cigarettes of his desk.
One, two, three left...damnit.
James put one in his mouth and left the rest of the pack on the desktop before making his way to his ship. He yelled about his departure, hoping Daisy heard him where she was, before making his decent.
There were a few things Nick didn’t need to tell Bucky about this job. He already knew exactly how much people didn’t enjoy you digging up their darkest secrets or analyzing their every move; he knew how much knowing these things about people’s lives would make people hate him, but he also knew how important it was for people to hate him. It’s always easier to do the right thing--no matter how dirty your hands might get--when everyone hates you; it makes it easier not to care.
As per usual, he bought enough cigarettes to kill a man twice his size before hopping on his bike and riding it to the closest dive bar. Several cigarettes and fingers of whiskey later, it was back on his bike, back to his ship, back to space.
He wasn’t Nick. Keeping an emotional distance from everyone wasn’t what he was good at. Maybe that’s why he’d rather watch everyone from a monitor, away from personal interaction, away from attachment and hurt.
The mind is its own place, and in itself Can make a heav’n of hell, a hell of heav’n.
MAINVERSE - CURRENT ARC: [ Make a Heaven of Hell ]
SUMMARY
It takes a lot to do Nick Fury's job, but not even the Winter Soldier can do it all on his own. So how do you get people to help?
You don't ask. You give them no options.
Bucky is been spending his time building up I.O.U.'s from heroes (and even a few villains) across the world by lending a hand when they need it most. You build up enough favors, and you don't really have to try hard to get people to help you. They owe you now.
