Retro Corner: Night Slashers (Arcade) Review

A new edition of Retro Corner is up as we begin the Halloween season with an old Arcade brawler from 1993. Night Slashers is a traditional brawler made by Data East who’s often known to produce titles like Bad Dudes. The version I am playing comes from the Nintendo Switch and PS4 port listed under Johnny Turbo’s Arcade. Right now, you are asking who is Johnny Turbo and why is he relevant to this review? There’s already a written article on his short comics back in May 2018 on this site and I recommend you check it out here. Compared to his fanboy antics in the past, his character is more relatable here. Flying Tiger Entertainment who published a list of Data East titles recently did a great job using him which Turbo Technologies Failed to do. When portraying a character for the sole purpose of smearing your competitor then a company know they messed up. Its good of Flying Tiger Entertainment to use his character to promote quality titles. The game here as mentioned, is a traditional 2D brawler that were ordinarily found in the Arcade during 90s. The theme is about a demonic king summoning all kinds of demons and undead. He plans on opening a massive portal from his domain, so legions of demonic beings can take over Earth and turn it into a living Hell. A group of three fighters who are masters in their own fighting styles have come together to end this demonic king’s reign of terror on the world. The gameplay follows a core element for brawlers that Capcom and this studio did during that time. That is why gamers look back on Data East so fondly and it’s because they delivered quality games even when producing clones.
