17. Saying "I love you."
The Doctor stood there in stunned silence. Her lips had been soft against his only moments before, her body curled against his. Not that he was complaining, but it was hardly the reaction he'd expected when he said he'd picked up an odd signal from 2005 London. It was familiar, very similar to those of an old enemy of his, the Autons. He'd just mentioned he wanted to go check it out when she'd stepped up to him and kissed him, hard, that look blazing in her eyes.
She'd never said those three words before, not in all the time they'd been together. And while his hearts should have felt fit to burst with joy, the Doctor was suddenly terrified. His arms wrapped around her waist, holding her to him as if she might disappear right then, should he let go.
When he did speak, his voice was low and gruff. "River... why does this feel like a goodbye?"
