John Adams thought we should celebrate Independence Day on July 2.
After all, that was the day that the Continental Congress ended its debate and approved the resolution, proposed on June 7 by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia and seconded by Adams, that "all political connection between them (the United Colonies) and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved."
But it didn't work out that way.
