Archizoom Associati Strutture in liquefazione, 1968
Project by Andrea Branzi
The Structures in liquefaction were designed by Andrea Branzi as part of his collaboration with the Archizoom Associati group and published by Ugo La Pietra in an issue of IN devoted to "the destruction of object" (1971). This series of drawings – numbered 1 to 4 – can be read as a critical reflection on space and the objects that surround us.
In the first drawing, strange furniture, which would have taken root like a climbing plant to unfold on the walls, the floor and the ceiling, is composed of a unique assembly of geometric volumes. In the following images, the prismatic shape gradually shrinks and disintegrates, until it forms only a burst of crystalline micro-particles. Thus decomposed as if under the effect of weightlessness, Liquefaction Structures questions the relevance of a world saturated with objects and determines a new relationship to space, emancipated from any geometric reference.
This radical project constitutes an essential turning point in the research of Archizoom: if the use of bright colors and the dynamic sequencing of the drawings (type "storyboard") still underlines the influence of pop aesthetics and Archigram, the very concept of liquefaction announces the notion of disseminated architecture that the group will develop in 1969 with No-Stop-City.
