FNM Pioneer @Demospel - week 38

I had to skip a few legacy events because of life and I decided to go play some pioneer at the store. I sleeved a version of Arclight Phoenix with the cards I own and it's still a very cool deck.

The event on the other hand was a little less fun as I had a bye on game 3 and decided to call it a night after 2 losses.

The games went as follow:

1-2: Metalwork colossus

1-2: Rakdos sacrifice

Metalwork colossus

I knew what my opponent was on and it's pretty much a race as I do not pack a lot of artifact removal, even in sideboarded games. Notably I missed lethal in g1 by tapping the wrong mana. I put my opponent to 1 with a blue mana open and a shock in hand. G3 I was stuck on two lands and my opponent countered my cantrips. It was a good play from him.

Rakdos sacrifice

Stumbled a lot to get a creature online the 3 games and he pinged me dangerously low every time. Game 3 came down to a topdeck on his side as I was at 1 but he got a cat finally. The interaction is always hard and I think I targeted Devil one game instead of the Oven. Not sure if it was a good decision but I was facing a lot of damage.

Takeways

I noticed I missed a lot of discard effects and I really should add some Chart a course but lots of decks don't really run that card anymore

I have a whopping 11 creatures count and still found it difficult to put a threat on the board early on

Shock doesn't hit quite a few creatures but I find it very important to hit the dome if the opponent has no treats on the board

FNM Legacy @Demo-Spel - 05/08

Keeping the dream alive I sleeved phoenix again for FNM. It was THE deck that made me wanna play legacy but I never play it enough.

I started with a bang but finished 5th overall:

2-0 Nic fit

2-0 Esper control

0-2 Bomberman

0-2 Maverick

Nic fit

Game 1: I sculpt my hand with a Darcy, bolt a vet for extra mana, cast phoenixes GG.

Game 2: durdle a lot, create many 1/1s and try to attack but she's getting back in the game and gaining life. After Gargaroth hits the battlefield, my only chance is to Chain combo so I make the game go as long as I can for the combo kill with both Sedgmoor and Witherbloom on the battelfield... that was fun!

Esper control

Game 1: combo we exchange a few resources and he thoughtseizes me. I topdeck the perfect card to bury alive my phoenixes anyway.

Game 2 turn 1 without thoughtseize check. My opponent did not approve of the play but I thought I had a good read on him not having FOW.

Bomberman

Had to mulligan 2 times to 5 and didn't draw a lot. Game 1 he kills me pretty quickly after he puts a wall of thopters to block my phoenixes.

Game 2: I attack his hand with cabal rituals and thoughtseizes. We are both in topdeck mode but I draw a few too lands and he gets out better than me.

Maverick

On a mul to 5, I go phoenix combo without thougtseize check but he had endurance and I couldn't come back.

Game 2: we exchange a lot of resources and I try to topdeck him but he manages to Swords my 2 apprentices and I was hoping for a chain on my Witch... never happened!

Takeways

The two angles of the combo are great. This time I made a 2/2 split of S-Witch and apprentice but against white decks it might be problematic if the 2 apprentices are removed.

I was very happy about Darcy. She helps filter cards, is a threat on its own and a fine turn 1 play.

I think S-Witch is pretty good in this deck as she poops a lot of tokens but I havn't found those relevant this time. I was thinking about Plumb the Forbbiden which would be great to refill and synerzige well with it. However, I'm not sure what I would cut for it.

Lightning Bolt was very lackluster as there are quite a few x/4s in the matchups I faced and maybe Unholy Heat would be a good replacement.

I used Reanimate once. I like the cheese factor and the fact that it can rebuy apprentice for the combo but I'm not sure it's required in this deck.

There are 2 angles in which I'd like to take the deck for some fun. #1 is to increase the tokens synergies. Add young pyromancers, witches and Plumb and forgo Darcy. #2 is to add more discard and go full combo with 4 apprentices maybe add Abundant Harvest.

Anyways, that's all for this time.

The Phoenixes will rise from their ashes again!!!
