What’s the best cough syrup to take?
Obligatory not a doctor. The best cough medicine to take is … none.
There is zero evidence that OTC cough medicine helps with colds. Not in the way they claim. And one thing we know they do, suppress a cough, isn’t actually a good thing.
Look I get it, coughing sucks. No lie I’d far rather be throwing up than have a cough. But if it’s a productive cough, meaning it’s bringing that gross crud up out of your lungs, that’s good. You don’t actually want to suppress that. That phlegm is an irritant, it’s not good for us, that why we cough. To expel the things in our lungs and esophagus that really shouldn’t be there.
Hit the Ibuprofen (Advil/motrin) or the Acetaminophen (Tylenol). You can even double on these, just do so carefully (There’s no drug interaction between them, but combining them can give some an upset stomach). Hot tea with honey will help soothe the throat. Lots and lots of water and throw in an electrolyte drink once or twice a day. Have some hard candies on hand, doesn’t have to be a cough drop, Lifesavers, mints, Werther’s Caramels. These also help soothe the throat. And a basic saline spray for your nose and sinuses.
If you really feel like you need to suppress the cough, like at night to sleep, or because you can’t call out sick, it’s really down to personal preference. Just get a basic one. Again those mucus relief, blah, blah, blah, no evidence they do anything to actually help your cold, so don’t pay for the extra claims. Also if you’re on antidepressants and want to take a cough syrup find one without dextromethorphan (The DM cough medicines) as they can have an adverse interaction.
