Ever since the Southern Isles’ 13th prince escaped the ship to take him home, there had been rumors. Some believed those on the ship were loyal to Hans and let him go free to escape his due punishment. Some think they killed him before he reached his home’s shores. Whatever the case may be, he surely never made it back to his kingdom.
But as days became weeks became months, no sign of him ever showed itself. Eventually he was more or less forgotten. No one cared about some humiliated nothing prince, so far from the king’s throne. And the kingdom of Arendelle had much more pressing matters to be concerned with. There was no way Hans could get near the sisters or threaten them so easily again. He was likely no danger, and thus put aside to deal with at a later date should he show himself again.
In truth the prince had escaped purely by accident. It wasn’t that he was looking to get away on purpose, although he certainly took the chance once it was given. The sheer panic he felt of knowing what was left for him back home had made his magic flare up uncontrollably. The flames had started burning his cell below deck and it wasn’t calming any time soon. He had broken out then, diving into the water while the crew tried to put the fires out. Hans had little idea if they succeeded and he didn’t care. After all, they were sending him off to his death, so why should he care? But the swim back to shore was no easy task and he was sure he would end up passing out under the waves if he hadn’t found a drifting log close to the island. He had no map to know for sure just where he was but he was alive and that was what mattered. Adjusting to life alone was easy, he was used to that. But the tasks needed to survive proved to be challenging. Hans had taken to using fire to his advantage, something he was driven to do through desperation. He wasn’t proud of it, but until he learned how to properly hunt it was what he could manage. He avoided visitors as much as he could as the times passed and he knew his control was wavering. Fire left its mark far too easily, and people were becoming concerned with the unusual sightings. A cave was easiest to hide in but he hoped he would be able to find an opportunity to get off the island before he was found out. He just needed to look presentable enough to do that, and given the months alone he was not in the best state. Sighing, Hans dragged his soot stained hand over his tired face and pushed himself up to go find a stream to clean himself at, then he could make his plan. Once one of those travelers made a stop here he could steal some of their clothes, maybe some of their money to buy a boat out of here. It wasn’t the best plan but he was running out of options. He just hoped the next traveler here wasn’t looking for a monster to hunt.
