Sticker. Who doesn’t love stickers? They make your life more whimsical. You can put them on anything and make it better. Well, that’s the rule unless they are small and you have to put them precisely on your Legos. Then they become your worst enemy.
You sat at your desk building your lego formula you got for Christmas for the past hour. Your friend got you since they knew how much you love legos and f1. There was just something magical about putting brick by brick until you made some miniature.
In the set you got thirty little stickers. ‘Stickers, how fun!’ you thought and you thought wrong. Everytime you put one in, it was crooked or it had bubbles of air under the surface. It made the whole building part less fun. Your breathing became faster and your hands shook more with each try. Usually you would be at half of the building instruction by this point. But not this time. This time the stickers hated you. The perfectionist in you won’t allow this to conquer you. You. You who went through one of the hardest colleges and have a demanding job. No, you won’t let this lego set for ten year olds beat you. You can do this.
Your hands sweated and shook. Your breathing fastened. The frustration took away your focus. Warm tears formed in you eyes.
You were so immersed into it that you didn’t hear the door opening and another person coming in. They sneaked closer towards you. Gentle arms slowly embracing you. Before you could stop it, his hand wipes a tear from your cheek.
“What’s wrong, baby?” His voice was dulcet. Soothing your agitation.
You couldn’t muster a word. Your tears were choking you. You show towards your desk and hide your face in his chest.Oscar held you tighter. He didn’t ask for an explanation. Just held you against him, slowly swaying you.
“Shh, it’s okay.” Oscar whispers and kisses your temple. His hand stroking your hair.
After some time your breathing slows and your tears come to an end. Oscar crouched so your eyes were on the same level. “Can you tell me what made you so upset?” His question wasn’t demanding.
“Well…I just…” your hands fidget with his shirt. You felt a bit ashamed. “The stickers…they are so difficult. It made me feel stupid I can’t build a lego set for kids.” As you muster the words you feel it instantly, the blush creeping up your cheeks.
“Aw, baby,” his hands enveloped yours. “There’s nothing to be ashamed of. It can happen to anyone.” He takes what you built so far in his hands. “To be fair, those are very tricky. I don’t think I could put them any better. You did pretty well.”
You wanted to tell him he is wrong and that you have to fix it, but you just couldn’t. His soft brown eyes made you give up on it. “Thanks.”
“Always. If it helps, I can put all the stickers on the legos while you build.” Liking the idea you agree.
Soon you were both on the floor. Him chatting about something while you listened. Building Legos quickly got more fun with him and without needing to put the stickers on. All problems just seemed to disappear with him. You finally relaxed. You can’t even imagine just how lucky you are.
