Dominating a piazza on the Quirinal Hill, the highest of the seven hills of Rome, the Quirinal Palace was planned as a summer residence for the pope. When Pope Gregory XII commissioned the palace from the architect Martino Longhi the Elder in 1574, the high Quirinal Hill, well outside the limits of the city, seemed an ideal situation for the purpose. Pope Gregory from not thinking of a simple holiday home, however, not were his successors.
