So, I read about Arin and just had to ask!
When you say you can't see transparent objects, do you mean like birds and windows, or is there a certain colour you see in place of transparent objects?
- :)
It's mostly like, transparent objects are opaque to me. So when I look through a glass window, the glass part is just turns black and I can't see through it. And for opaque objects, they’re translucent so I can still faintly see their outlines but they’re mostly invisible to me. It really sucks, but luckily Ms. Sparrow made some special glasses for me to help with my vision and now I can pretty much see what everyone else does! I know my explanation wasn’t very good, so I made a drawing to explain it!
Thanks for asking!
- Arin
-Joel practically jumped up, death staring Qwynn.
"No, no, no!" He said, voice rising. "This is what I'm talking about! You act like the ymbryne's forgetting you is ok, but it's slowly eating you inside out!"
"Joel, keep it down." Arin said, tugging on his sleeve.
"I'm fine, really." Qwynn said. Joel was about to retort when someone started clicking their cup.
"Children!" Miss Sparrow called, getting everyones attention. "With five new guests here, we will break you down into partners to show everyone how our daily schedule works. Lets see. . . Mikael and Daniel, Issar and Peter, Arin and Qwynn can both take Joel, Dawn and Iris can take Luna, and Eleanor with Phillip."
And with that, breakfast was over. But before everyone dispersed, Eleanor managed a small wink to Qwynn. If talking them into confessing to Phillip wasn't an option, maybe vice versa will.-
Qwynn blushed and looked away, already knowing what Eleanor was insinuating. They turned to Joel instead and sighed. "Looks like I'm stuck with you and Arin for now." They didn't mean it in a mean way, it just came out a little more rude than they'd like.
Peter got up from his seat and looked at Issar curiously. He looked a little nervous walking up to him.
Daniel walked up to Mikael, playfully bumping his arm. "Looks like it's just the two of us for the day." He said, unable to hide his smile.
Iris jumped out of her seat, grabbing Dawn's hand and making her way to Luna. She looked super excited, though Dawn seemed a bit more cautious.
Phillip smiled happily at Eleanor. "Hey! Nice to formally meet you! It'll be fun to hang out with an ymbryne my age!" He grinned. "Or- Physically my age, I guess. Well, actually I think you might be older. Ah well, it'll still be fun!"
-Eleanor tapped Qwynn on the shoulder and pointed at Joel.
"You want me to get his attention?" Qwynn guessed. Eleanor nodded. Qwynn in turn tapped Joel, who spun around to see what was needed.
Joel's antenna's started glowing, more intense then ever as his face filled with joy and smugness. Eleanor was signing with her hands while sneaking some glances at Phillip.
"Hey, what are you two doing?" Someone asked. It was Arin, bored of talking with Iris.
"I'm glad you asked!" Joel said. "Well, let me ask you this first; What's the most obvious thing about Qwynnie here?"
"Their crush on Phil?" Arin said, making Qwynn flush deeper.
"Yup! So me, Ellie, and you too now, are going to do something about it."
"Which is. . . ?" Qwynn said, getting scared.
"Getting you two together!"-
"It can't be that obvious!" They retort. Then they pause and reconsider, "Can it..?"
They look genuinely horrified at the realization before their attention shifts to the second point made. "And there's really no point, he won't even remember me tomorrow." They cross their arms and lean back, staring up at the ceiling for a few seconds before looking back down at Joel "It wouldn't work."
-"No, your mental health is not fine, not at all! My Papà taught me the more you hurt, the more you deny it." Joel said, antenna's flickering. "I can show you too. My antenna's aren't just for you, you know. Wanna see?"
"Maybe later, after we eat." Qwynn said, shoving a pancake in their mouth.
"Well, even though I'm seven physically, and emotionally, I'm... let's see, over 300 mentally now? So if you have issues, I'm all ears, wings, and..." Joel said, trailing off. But, the tips of his antennas started to consistently glow purple again.
Somewhere, in the back of Qwynn's mind, they heard a "I'm all antennas too."
They stared dumbstruck at Joel, who was now chatting with Arin.-
Qwynn opened their mouth to ask what just happened but stopped themselves and just went back to eating. They had seen and heard their fair share of weird stuff in the last five years. They lived with multiple people who could turn into animals and one talking cat. This was hardly the strangest thing they had experienced.
"Not long, kiddo, not at all." Jonothan said, looking at the clock mounted on the wall. "l say. . . 3, 2, aaand now!"
The door creaked open, signaling Miss Sparrow had returned.
"Say, she'd be mad to see you awake at this time. Go up to bed and meet 'em tomorrow." Jonothhn yawned. "Best if l go to bed myself. Goo' night lad!"
"Right. Night Jonothan." Daniel said, getting out of the chair.
Daniel quickly made his way upstairs, where the others had already gotten ready for bed. He changed as fast as he could and took his spot on the bottom bunk of his bed, in the room he shared with Arin.
He was anxious for tomorrow. To see Mikael again, to meet the new kids... He couldn't wait. But now was not the time to be thinking about what was to come. Now he needed to get some rest.
With his excitement now quelled, Daniel closed his eyes and drifted off into a calming, peaceful sleep.
The house was amongst stranger building the three had seen, mainly because it was a rather well-kept, modern house to be in an old graveyard of all the place sit could be.
Luna followed the cats confidently, Mikael's young figure propped on her back. It was only a couple of centuries ago when Señora Troupial (Never Señorita when addressing an ymbryne, out of respect for your elders) had brought her into her tourist loop. Was it boring watching people get run over by bulls over and over? At times. But the songs never got old.
"Am I dreamin', or is dis ja present times?" Issar asked, shaking his thick hair out of his face. The hair was a normal shade of brown, with frost dancing at the tips.
"Very present, Mr. Ege." Guinevere said, trailing up the stairs to the manor. After a few complications and a leapfrog, they finally made it to the present day. . . whenever that is, for they still don't know. Once at the door, Guinevere started changing, her fur receding and grow taller, until she was fully a human.
"Hvad fanden!?" Mikael yelled, jumping from Luna's back. He was light from lack of food, being a sickly shade of pale.
"I agree. I thought only ymbrynes could shapeshift, save for that one dog." Luna said in disbelief as Jonothan jumped onto Guinevere's shoulder. Just as she was about to say something, a bunch of commotion started inside.
"They're here!" "Let me see!" "Daniel, make a window!"
"Shut up Arin, Iris, all of you!" Presumably Daniel said, opening the door. "I apologize greatly for their attitude, but things got a bit rough when Miss Sparrow left."
"She left already? I thought she wasn't going after those two untiI we came back with these three." "She found out there was an ymryne or demi among them, so she left instantly." "Then I must also apologize for leaving them in your care without me or Jon."
"It's fine, considering it's barely been 10 hours. But please, come on in before the house gets burnt down!"
As soon as they stepped into the house, the children started to swarm them and bombard them with questions.
“What are their names?”
“Weren’t there less of them?”, “No, you idiot, that’s the other ones!”, “There’s more!?”
“Who are they?”
“Oh, are there people here?”, “Yeah, why did you think we were at the door?”, “I dunno… a package?”
“What can they do?”
“We were expecting visitors?”, “They’re here because they were in grave danger, do you ever listen to anything?”
“Where are they from?”
Guinevere and Daniel tried to push them all away to give the three new peculiars some space, but to no avail. The questions wouldn’t stop.
“Children!” A voice boomed across the hall, silencing everyone. From the other side of the house, Ms. Flamingo marched towards them, heels clicking on the floor. She looked a little annoyed at their behaviour, though mostly concerned for the new children. “Has Vivian not taught you all better?” She pushed past the small crowd, making room. “Give them space, they’ve travelled a long way.”
Almost immediately, Guinevere ushered the kids into another room, leaving the three new arrivals and Jonothan with Ms. Flamingo.
She sighed softly, crouching down a little to meet their eye level. “I’m sorry about all that, I’m sure it must be… overwhelming.” After getting a good look at them, she rose up. “You three need to rest. Maybe you could have something to eat first.”
She walked towards the dining room, inviting the three to join her. “Come with me, I’ll make you a meal.” She walked past the room of children, who all stared at the new arrivals in wonder. “I’m not the best cook, unfortunately, but I’m not half-bad.”
She pulled out some chairs for them, making sure they’d be comfortable. “Take a seat. Maybe you should introduce yourselves, I’m not entirely ‘in the loop’, as they say.”
