His smile dims, then returns, accompanied by a chuckle. He returns her gaze, its intensity mirrored in his eyes, and leans in, almost secretive. "Your life is a goddamn mess, then, you do realize that."

The next beat consists of him standing in silence, waiting for her to roll her eyes and let the moment go. He understands, he does, how absolutely wrecking it is to allow a second of impulse be washed away by common sense, potentially the most overrated institution alive in modern society. Spontaneity is what makes the world breathe; instinct is, at the end of the day, the only source you can rely on; he's read all that in corny YA novels. But it's college what Ari is putting on the line here, it's a whole lot of sweat and money he couldn't simply go around wasting. His hands are on his hips and he’s shaking his head at her like he’s a grown-up and she just got caught pulling her classmate’s pigtails. “It’s lunatic.”
