Paige’s Birth Story

23 APRIL 2020

“Here she is everyone! Our second little girl has finally decided to join us! While initially our plan was to have a natural water birth with no complications like Evie’s birth, sometimes it doesn’t always go to plan.“

“Let me take you back, to when I was 39w6d pregnant. I had a cervical exam and was already 3cm dilated. I was excited that I was in labour and finally was going to get this baby out. But then I got to my due date, and contractions started. Then stopped. Then I went one day over and got more contractions. That stopped again. Over and over. Day two three and four but on the fifth day I knew that something was finally happening. I called up the maternity ward to warn them I was coming soon, but ended up going to bed.

“At 40w6d I decided it was time, I was going into the hospital to get checked, at least. After the usual CTG scans I got another exam and was at 6cm. I was admitted to the ward at 9:36am.

“I started off slow on the birthing ball to get things going a bit faster. But the contractions weren’t getting worse. SO we opted to have y waters broken and everything went faster from there. Thankfully. After some talk with the midwife with me, Megan, about my previous tear she suggested that we try not having a water birth and doing a kneeling/squat position over the bed so that was easier for them to give me a warm compress on the perineum to avoid tearing. So thats what happened.  At 2:17 I began to push and it was amazing, I watched the clock, I watched the second hand tick as it got closer to the time I got to meet y baby girl. Everything was going well, no tearing thus far and the hard part was almost over. But once her head was out, my contractions slowed again and we waited for the next contraction, and from here everything went wrong. 

“Shoulder dystocia. One percent of vaginal births. and it happened to me. Basically the shoulders didn’t stay in the correct place in the birth canal and she got stuck. So the midwife done something that scared everyone, I’m thankful now, but it could have gone so bad. Basically she grabbed Paige’s head and pulled her shaking her side to side to get her out. Then all at once she came out and I was in bliss.

“My baby girl was finally here, she looked just like her big sister. Deimon and I sat happily for a few moments examining her, having some skin to skin time where she eventually routed to the breast and started her first feed. She looked so small and fragile, Silly me was saying she’d weight 8 pounds 7 ounce. My heart melted. It was all over now, I had my baby she safe and I’m safe. I was so fucking relieved.

“But then it was placenta time. As with Evie I had the shot to help the uterus contract back and help with the birthing of the placenta. I don’t remember Evie’s one at all, so I didn’t know what to expect. By now I’d been moved to the bed and was having the midwife pull on the umbilical cord to get the placenta to come out. And then, it snapped. Blood squirted out and made a hilarious mess. But while I was laughing at the mess Megan was on her phone demanding more staff to help us. A team of four came rushing in and I started to panic, I realised what had happened. I’d read up on every possible complication. I’d done my homework. So I was made to sit on the toilet and try to squeeze it out, I can’t explain how I felt at that moment without feeling like a complete drama queen. But I felt like I was dying. I became horribly sick, I threw up all over the bathroom floor, I was shaking, light headed and having contractions. Meanwhile Paige was being weighed and measured etc. Deimon yells out to me her weight, I didn’t hear it, I was sort of worried about me in that moment. I heard mutters from the midwives about theatre and emergency surgery to remove the placenta. They kept checking their watches, I was on a timer.

I was again moved back to the bed to try a manual removal and well, lets just say the doctors hand was riggghhtttt up there and with my efforts of pushing and her scooping we managed to get it out. It was so painful. I then had to have yet another second degree tear stitched up, but compared to last time it was so painless, the doctor actually listened to me when I asked to have a lot more anaesthetic put in, and when I told her I could felt it, she waited a bit longer. The doctor last tie didn't take me seriously.

After two hours of post delivery fixing up, I was showered and walked to my room for recovery, and that was where I finally got to take a breather and be thankful it all turned out okay.”

36 Weeks Pregnant

24 MARCH 2020

WEEK 33-

“Getting big and heavy, everything is so much harder at the moment. I don’t really have much else to say.”

WEEK 34-

“This week has been full of sadness. I can’t help but feel depressed lately. Evie’s becoming naughty and not listening and the techniques I use aren’t working like they usually would. I’ve been too tired to go outside and play with her. I feel like Deimon’s going to leave me at any moment because I’ve become so useless. This pregnancy is becoming a burden on us. And I hate to say it but its how I’m feeling at the moment. All this stress put me into a false labour this week, I feel like an idiot now for believing it was labour, and I’m glad I didn’t go to the hospital because thats the last place I want to be right now considering the virus.”.

WEEK 35-

“Still so sore and complainy. I don’t have much else to say. Baby Paige is moving around still so she’s not too comfy in there at the moment...”

WEEK 36-

“Had another appointment with my midwife and she measured the bump size and it had decreased a significant amount so she booked me in for an ultrasound to check to see baby’s size. I’m not stressed about her size though. She also sent for me to get some blood and give a urine sample because she’s worried about my iron and proteins... A sign of Pre-eclampsia I believe. Still trying not to worry. I have another update planned in regards to the COVID-19 virus and will have a bit of a vent on that post”

40 Weeks Pregnant

15 APRIL 2020

WEEK 37-

“Things have been pretty okay this week. I personally started self isolation with Evie this week, only going to the essential doctors appointments for baby girl. Because of her measurement changes last week I was booked in for a growth scan to check she’s okay and what not.We got to the scan and there were taped down lines of how close we could be to one another, the chairs were lined like prisoners. It was scary seeing how the world had changed in small ways like that. Anyway, the technician said that Baby Girl is big, long legs and a lot of chub to her and measured her to be at nearly 7 pounds in weight. But I had minimal amniotic fluid left so they booked me in for another scan in two weeks time”

WEEK 38-

“Nothing much happened this week, I’ve felt sick and lazy everyday. I’m slightly depressed thinking about how Paige is going to enter the world and all the terms and conditions that come with being a newborn during the pandemic. I even hated Oreos this week and that says something!”

WEEK 39-

“I honestly didn’t think I’d make it this far in this pregnancy. I have been having amazingly painful Braxton Hicks this past week and I was convinced it was labour but nope. Got me excited and let me down...

Had my second scan this week and had nothing new than what was found last time. We did find out that she’s put on some more weight and is now sitting at 8 pound 3 ounces, which if she follows an average growth in the next week or so, she should be weighing just as much as Evie at 8 pound 10 ounces. But i’ll say it here, I think she’ll be lighter but longer. Deimon thinks the opposite”

WEEK 40-

“If I was mad I made it to thirty nine weeks, I’m even more mad I made it to forty! I am in pain constantly, I’m tired and I keep getting frustrated at Evie’s behaviour lately and yelling. And thats not the kind of mother I usually am. So I saw the midwife for the last time today and we discussed the end goals of this pregnancy. I got a cervical examination to find I was already 3cm dilated and was offered a stretch and sweep which I took to get things started. Then while chatting we decided that I’ll definitely be having her soon and that she bets that she will be seeing me on the ward tonight! She booked me in for an induction next Thursday in case I haven’t gone into a natural labour. I’m scared of that happening though. However once i got home a few hours ago I have been having some contractions so fingers crossed for me!”
