How does Arixtra work?

Blood clotting can be a problem when blood flow is disturbed in any way. Arixtra is an anticoagulant: it prevents the blood from coagulating (clotting). The active ingredient in Arixtra, fondaparinux sodium, stops one of the substances (factors) that are involved in the clotting of blood, factor Xa. When this is blocked, no thrombin (another factor) can be produced, and no clot can be formed. By using Arixtra after surgery, the risk of a blood clot forming is greatly reduced. By reducing blood clots, Arixtra can also help the flow of blood to the heart to be maintained in patients with angina or who are having a heart attack.

Bleh, I knew this was coming but I was hoping it wouldn't.  Got a letter from my new insurance company that my Arixtra is on their formulary but only in limited quantities.  I was put on it basically until something better comes out/for life/whatever.  

However, I don't have a new primary care physician.  All I have is the nurse practitioner I saw once who refilled my prescriptions until I can see the doctor in December.  So I sent a message to the clinic, hopefully they can figure out who needs to contact my insurance about approving the medication.

I really wish insurance companies didn't take it upon themselves to limit medications, or put them on ridiculous formularies. :/
