An incomparable architectural showpiece of Mahabalipuram!
The Descent of the Ganges, known locally as Arjuna's Penance at Mahabalipuram near Chennai in the state of Tamilnadu is a ginormous open-air bas-relief carved out of pink granite.
It derives its name from the penance performed by Arjuna to get the Celestial weapon Pasupastra from Lord Shiva and the penance performed by Maharaja Bhagiratha to bring River Ganga from heaven to earth. It measures 15 meters in height and 30 meters in width and constitutes more than a hundred life-size figures of various deities, birds, and wild animals including a family of elephants and monkeys.
At Mahabalipuram, on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, in the Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu is where you can find this architectural masterpiece.
