Midnight Greeting by King and Queen
Arm-in-arm on balcony for the Fifth Time
Shortly before midnight, when, in heavy rain, thousands of people were still outside Buckingham Palace and cars were six deep in the Mall, the King and Queen, arm-in-arm, appeared on the balcony for the fifth time since their return from the Coronation.
The enthusiasm of the multitude, who had cheered unceasingly throughout the evening, had been insistent.
The King was in evening dress and the Queen is a white ermine cloak with diamond tiara when they stepped on to the floodlit balcony to acknowledge the clamorous greetings.
