"let's get you cleaned up."
blood, blood, gallons of the stuff !
Only the goddesses knew how long this pursuit had gone on, but it was becoming clear it couldn't last much longer. The Hunters landed a lot of their hits, and although the wounds had closed through magic by now, the pain and exhaustion slowed the universal down enough for one of the pursuing men to gain on her. A kick to the back did easy work of knocking her to the ground, before the boot of one of the men pinned her down with laughable ease.
The rest of the men quickly caught up, shouting something amongst themselves, but Stephanie did not comprehend them, too desperately focused on trying to crawl out from underneath the man's weight with no use.
The Hunter chuckled to himself and drew out his axe. He slowly brought it above his head, ready to make good use of it when-
A horrific roar tore through the woods. A sound unlike any they've heard before.
" What the fuck?! " exclaimed one of the men, his head swinging around in an attempt to spot whatever made the unholy noise. The Hunter pinning her down shifted his weight onto his other leg in a moment of hesitation. This was her chance!
She jerked her body side to side with as much energy as she could muster, making the man lose balance and fall onto the ground next to her. Steph scrambled to get herself away, but the sudden stop to their long chase made the muscles in her legs cramp up. She couldn't stand, let alone run! Hectically pushing herself back and away from the men with her hands didn't help get any distance between them and all too quickly the man rose back to his feet, axe still firmly in hand. Now she had a front row seat to the Hunter charging at her.
" You'll pay for that you little- " he yelled out as Stephanie braced herself for a hit, but one never came. Another roar echoed out, this time much louder - closer -, as loud thuds approached them rapidly, shaking the ground. From within the trees erupted a gigantic monster, a creature beyond description, and with one impossibly swift motion it tore the Hunter in half with its jaws. The rest of the men screamed as warm blood and viscera rained down upon all of them. They didn't even have the time to swing their weapons before meeting the same fate as their comrade.
And as their screams quieted down and the bloody pile of what had remained settled in front of her, the realisation quickly dawned: She was next. The creature's eyes pierced through her, merciless, cold, but worst of all - vaguely human. Her legs still cramped up, she tried to drag herself away with her arms, knowing it was useless.
Unable to flee or fight, all her body could muster was a scream. The twisted form sprinted at her, jaws drawn open when out of nowhere - a loud bang. And another. Followed by another.
Shots rang out through the woods, too numerous to count. The monstrosity screeched and writhed in pain or perhaps simply out of instinct, before running after dozen more shots pierced its body. It disappeared between the same trees it appeared out of, seemingly mostly unharmed.
Stephanie sat there on the ground unmoving, her chest rapidly rising and falling. Completely frozen in terror and still cramped up, her gaze fixated in the direction the beast scuttled off to. It was nowhere in sight. The forest soon grew silent once more. Eerily silent. Too silent.
" What in the world was that?! " she spoke, her words coming out as more of a shaky whisper, almost as if that thing were to come sprinting back were she to disturb the silence any further.
A male voice snapped her out of panic, finally forcing the universal to tear her eyes away from the still woods, settling on the man who just stepped into her field of view. Did he save her? No response came from her, not yet, she couldn't even process what he said. She studied the figure in front of her blankly. He was tall, athletically built, and certainly didn't seem as phased by the situation as one should be. Something about the tired look in his eyes and the weapon in his hand made her wonder - Was he expecting it to be here? Has he faced it before? How else could he be so calm?
Her eyes darted from his gun to the swords and axes left scattered about where the monster struck. They were the only things still left intact from the mutilated men. If all those shots weren't enough to kill it, those poor bastards never even stood a chance.
" C-Cleaned up? " she repeated hesitantly as the words registered in her head at last. Only now had she become painfully aware of the warm viscous fluid running down her face. One hesitant glance down confirmed it: blood splattered across her entire body, streaming down her fingers, soaked into the fibers of her clothes. For the first time in her life, it wasn't her own blood she was covered in.
" Oh gods... " the woman whimpered, covering her mouth with her hands despite the blood on them. Nausea rocked through her almost instantly, a nausea she had to swallow down before it reached the top of her throat.
" This can't be happening, this isn't real, this didn't happen... " Stephanie muttered to herself through shallow breaths. The pain in her legs finally gave away, she could stand up now.
" ...This is real... You saved me..." a resigned whisper came from her lips after she had pulled herself up on her shaky feet. She couldn't stop staring at what had remained of her attackers.
Just when they had her in their grasp they became the prey she was intended to be. How cruel was the irony of fate.
