This GIF was created from several photographs of the 86th Army-Navy Game, played in Philadelphia on December 7, 1985. Records in our holdings include photographs, press kits, maps of the stadium, and other information about the game that year.

Often referred to as college football’s purest rivalry, the Army-Navy Game has a long and celebrated history. First played in 1890, the tradition takes places every year and marks the end of the regular college football season. Historically, the game most often takes place in Philadelphia, moving over the years from University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field to JFK Stadium and later to Veteran’s Stadium. The game is currently held at the Lincoln Financial Field, home of Super Bowl VII Champions, the Philadelphia Eagles.

The game is often attended by the sitting president or his representative and symbolizes interdisciplinary sportsmanship between the United States Armed Forces. The Army’s Black Knights (also called the “Cadets”) come from the United States Military Academy at West Point and the Navy’s Midshipmen come from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland.

Are you ready for some football? The #ArmyNavyGame will be played today. The rivals first met on the football field on November 29, 1890. The game has been held at several locations throughout its history, including Baltimore and New York City, but has most frequently been played in Philadelphia, roughly equidistant from the two service academies. The Polo Grounds holds the record for most Army–Navy games hosted outside of Philadelphia with nine, hosting all New York City games through 1927. In this newspaper advertisement from 1925, the Pennsylvania Railroad encouraged those attending the game to ride the Congressional Limited from Baltimore to New York. For $10, a passenger could purchase a round trip ticket and a “quick, convenient trip,” without the worries of traffic or parking. That year, 65,000 people attended the nation’s football game. The next day, the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper reported “Army Sinks Navy, 10–3.” Six turnovers proved to be Navy’s demise. After driving to the Army three-yard line early in the second quarter, Navy settled for a field goal. The Cadets, led by “Tiny” Hewitt and “Lighthorse” Harry Wilson, scored a touchdown just before halftime and a field goal in the fourth quarter. Navy leads the all-time series, 60-51-7.
