“No, not re---” Ethan cut himself off with a curse, almost jerking his arm out of Jon’s grasp before he caught himself. Okay, yeah, that hurt more than it should. “Okay, okay, okay-- Yeah, that hurts. I’m... sure it’ll be fine, though. It isn’t at the ‘I want to die’ level. I think we should just keep moving? Yeah, sounds like a good plan to me.”

He raised his head without speaking a word, because he knew the possibility of the said traitor being himself. His lips parted slightly as he exhaled slowly to calm himself down before reacting to this information. “A traitor?” His voice was calm, a skill learnt after years of lying. “What happened??”

Ethan regarded his friend with a look. “It was overwhelming, wasn’t it?” he asked, voice light and conversational. “I don’t know what it is, I just... I think that obsessing over what other people think is bad. But, I also get it? Like, I’m fucking thirty-four and I still want people to think I’m a good person. Well, maybe not ‘think’, but... I like acting like what people think a good person is.”

“Yeah.” Ethan curled his fingers in his hair, feeling the strain and honing in on it. He huffed out a short breath, and put on a small smile. “I kinda have to, at this point. I think if I stopped thinking the way I do, then... I don’t think I’d be the same person ever again.” His lips twitched, smile spreading into a loose grin. “Dang, that was heavy. Not trying to bum you out, seriously. I just feel like my beliefs are fundamental to my person. So, yeah. I really think that way. Gotta have a little faith, sometimes.”

Although he was scoffing, Damien was definitely trying to keep himself warm by wrapping his arms around himself. “I’m fine,” he insisted. “Totally fine. I run warm. Besides, you need my jacket more than I do right now.” He shivered, but he tried his best to ignore it. “Do you ever, like, think about how crazy it is for the desert to be this freezing? I mean, dude, the desert. Come on.” He kept up his teasing tone, wanting to lighten the mood. They had a long night ahead of them, and he thought some kind of humor would be the best response.
