How do you talk to someone so different from you? Especially when you’re so certain they’re misguided? Brooke didn’t know how to approach Kate. Or at least...she thought she didn’t. Now, she wasn’t so sure if it was just her mind making excuses, rationalizing her refusal to associate with the shy girl, or if she legitimately had an excuse for it. Normalcy was difficult to comprehend after...the bathroom incident.
That’s what the administration called it. They were updating security to get around another bathroom incident, they’d imposed a strict curfew to avoid another bathroom incident. They beat around the bush because they couldn’t admit to themselves what had happened: a student had gotten a gun and brought it onto campus, and he had used it.
And now that blue-haired girl was dead. Chloe? Was that her name? Anyway, the point was, Brooke didn’t feel right not talking to people. So, she walked up to Kate.
“Hi, Kate,” she said. “I, uh, I hope you’re doing okay. Uh...” Brooke sighed. “I’ll be honest, I don’t really know what to talk about. You read Bradbury, right? Ever read the Martian Chronicles?” It was a stretch; Brooke was pretty sure Kate stuck to the author’s poetry. But maybe they’d get just a bit of common ground. Something to start a conversation.
