Pilot Oliver:

- he sleeps on the floor during an open widow and a storm

- cold doesn’t bother him

- he barely speaks, unable to communicate

- he is deeply traumatized

- has nightmares about the island

s5 flashbacks Oliver:

- he spent the last year among people

- formed closed friendship with Anatoly

- lived in Russia, in a city

- was tortured for two days on the island 

- his escape was very well planned by him

Conclusion: everything about him in the show’s pilot was a lie. He was silent, because he was lying, he did not return five years later, because he was stranded, but because he just didn’t want to do it earlier. He was not struggling to survive, he spent his last 3 years working for Argus and trying to kill Russian mobster.
