De La Soul’s two (of a planned but as yet still incomplete trilogy) Art Official Intelligence records contained much of the soulful, jazzy beats, restless mobility between styles and ideas, and intelligent, eloquent lyricism of their first four records, but without so much freshness and variety. These two records were supposedly future-looking but simply weren’t varied enough; few futuristic records make the future sound quite so monotone, or are so preoccupied with themes so mundane.
