The relationship between Art Pepper and Chet Baker represents the pinnacle of West Coast Jazz in the mid-1950s.
(English / Español / Italiano)
It is their most famous collaboration, recorded in October 1956. Originally released under the title Playboys and with a cover inspired by the famous magazine, it was withdrawn and reissued in 1961 as Picture of Heath (listen here) after legal threats from Hugh Hefner. Almost the entire repertoire was composed by saxophonist Jimmy Heath. Tracks such as "For Minors Only" and "Minor Yours" stand out for the melodic counterpoint between Baker's lyrical trumpet and Pepper's emotional alto saxophone. In 1956, a year of grace for both, they recorded several fundamental projects; ``The Route´´, recorded in July 1956, showcases a direct and elegant swing style with tracks such as "Tynan Time" and "Sonny Boy" & Chet Baker Big Band (a large-format session recorded in October 1956 where Pepper was part of the saxophone section).
