thinking about the anna haifisch panel again
for those who don’t know, the first panel was illustrated in isolation by anna haifisch, and the second one is another artist’s response. and although i appreciate the meaningfulness and value of both of these panels, i’m disappointed that a lot of people online only ever see the first panel within the context of the second.
last year i made a recreation of anna haifisch’s panel in juggle lab (i know) because it’s a drawing that means a lot to me, and i find a lot of value in its minimalist nature. also because it was just a really funny idea. when the post got picked up by the ferocious virality of the Juggling Shitpost Trend, i was a bit disappointed to find people in the tags asking where the “second part” was.
there is no second part. anna’s haifisch’s panel is not an unfinished story; it is a story in and of itself. i know that some people seek out art for hope, and i do as well sometimes. but i wish more people understood the value of art that does not, in itself, believe in hope.
when i tell people about my problems, i feel the need to comfort them with the resolution that i’m doing better than it sounds. if i’m lonely and scared that it’ll be that way forever, i need to tell them out loud that of course i know it won’t be forever, that i know if i’m patient and i keep looking eventually i won’t be.
but the fact is that i don’t always believe that. sometimes i do, but sometimes i simply don’t. and i feel that i am too quick to bury that feeling in shame. after all, what a self-centered thing it is to wallow in my own incurable pain. at the very least i shouldn’t burden others with it.
it bleeds into my art. i’ve added good endings when i knew i didn’t want to. when i wanted to share what it feels like when a bad thing seems to go on forever. i wanted to give my bad thoughts room to breathe, because then their briefness will prove itself. but constricting them in an artificial box labeled “hope” only makes them seem bigger. if i don’t ever see them for themselves, how will i ever know that they don’t go on forever?
seek out hope in art. believe in hope, of course. like the second panel if you like it. but if someone tells you a story about a bad thing, resist the instinct to ask them for a good ending. let the bad thing be.
It's always super disheartening to me when I hear about the art side of TikTok dogpiling someone - usually a kid - over having a more abstract art style that bends the rules.
Actually go fuck yourself if you do this.
We have both AI bros churning out slop and corporations pushing bland, shareholder-friendly, sanitized garbage. We NEED more artists pushing the envelope. We need people to be wild and free. It's not just about needing some joy and whimsy, it's also about actively fighting against the suppression of creativity and self expression.
Think like... the art styles UPA, former communist states (ex. USSR and Yugoslavia), and even 90s Nickelodeon. These were all deliberately meant to be anti-conformist, and they're all still highly regarded for standing out.
We need that kind of shit again in this homogeneous wave of sludge. We need younger artists going that extra mile. Hell, you should try it too - it's fun to experiment! Draw some stuff with silly proportions and concepts! Use unconventional mediums! Push the envelope! Make something that soulless bastards refuse to make!
aughggg I hate having to redraw my signature.. honestly I don’t know if I even like my signature… iv had it since I was rlly small and everybody I show it too is like “wow that’s a really good signature esp since you made it when you were like 7!” (Idontrmember how old.. it was 7-9 ish I think) and like.. yea it’s good but
Idk I’m bored of it maybe..? Then again it is 3 am and I can NOT wait to sleep so don’t listen to me.. this is for the void to consume....
If I had good enough art skills that doesn't make it look like shit, I would have drawn unmasked Teresa and Ragdoll as this image I found on Google I found very cute (Teresa being the dark pink one, Ragdoll the lighter color)
*art above dont belong to me, credit to og artist whoever they are*
is your sanders sides artstyle inspired by ANYONE in the 2010s because I have this hunch
My style is a blend of things I've found cool over the years, the biggest influences being Vivzipop, Aimasup, and a little bit of lavender town for how I handle line work and over all edgyness.
I personally really like the roundness that the majority of them have, the simplicity and scratchy/sharp lineart tickles a specific part of my brain. I really like the way Viv in particular has a lot of dynamic posing and the strong shape language all of them have.
I do have other styles I sometimes dip into, inspired largely by my massive Steven universe and gravity falls phases however I assumed this ask was mainly about my most recent sanders sides stuff because that's the most 2010-2020 coded.
I personally started engaging with the internet in 2019, but was typically drawn to the vibes/aethetics of earlier years paired with these new mediums I was discovering. The hazbin pilot days was really the biggest influence on my art considering it's why I started and was the style I tried replicating most often.
And not to brag but I think I've gotten pretty fucking close to at least the new-gen art style of Hazbin:
Anyways, thanks for the ask! I love talking about art and my own process, analysis of anything artistic has always been a strong interest of mine and it's always a blast to break down my own process.
If anyone else has questions about this kinda stuff PLEASE feel free to drop more questions in my ask box. It's always open even if I don't respond to everything right away <3
I tired to think of a "human version" of the Bull and every design I thought of felt wrong and a bit too similar to Zaraki Kenpachi from Bleach so yeah I'm NEVER doing that, modern aus and band aus made by me will be taking the existence of all those fantasy species into account lol
This is Kenpachi, btw
I guess it's pretty obvious why I can associate him with the Bull, at least on his looks lol
