Artist Sampler project: Pineapple
Coiling, dry felting, and crochet. Forth item was removed.
My artist sampler project was a disappointment. I had many ideas and concepts I was trying to work on that I ended up abandoning because of time, mistakes, and material. Originally, I wanted to make a very large coiled piece that could be viewed outside and inside. The issue I faced was I didn’t realize how long coiling takes to make. I spent my spring break coiling away, but I made a grievous error and started over on a much smaller scale, but my second attempt wasn’t much better. The shape I was trying to get was a sphere, but it became oval/jar shaped instead. I didn’t have any time left, so I opted out of just finishing the piece in whatever way possible. I completely rehashed my original concept and assembled something last minute. After most of my ideas didn’t pan out, I realized after looking at this miserable piece, it sort of resembled a pineapple. So I needle felted some leaves and crochet a bottom support. My forth piece was a pair of glasses, but I decided to remove them in the end even if I found it humorous.
I believe this piece was a failure because I couldn’t let go learning how to coil. It was the process I wanted to try in class the most. The form and the way it builds upon itself from coiling sculptures I’ve seen interested me; I wanted to pursue that, but it wasn’t working out. The yarn I used wasn’t suited for the look I wanted and the rope I used was too flexible. Regardless, I got stubborn to make it work, but it ended up nothing close to what I wanted.
I suppose on a positive note, a student commented, “Nice pineapple!” when I was on the bus.
