Why Young Photographers Need to Start with Film - Stephen Shore

The number one reason, as I concur with Stephen Shore's article, is discipline. When you are limited in resources and constrained with technological spontaneity you tend to slow down and think carefully for your next shot so that everything should be spot on. The combination in which when you trigger that shutter, all factors considered, you created a pipeline that allows the right amount of light to travel to reach the film plane and exposes the latent image you intend to do. Patience is what discipline teaches you and eventually making you more keen to seeing the light.

I started with film 30 years ago and learned the craft by joining camera clubs but not darkroom techniques because during those years you don’t care so much about it since printing and developing labs are sprouting everywhere you go with one hour wait for both processes. So, why learned? My only problem then was archiving and that’s when I was thinking about the easy way to do it. With my passion in computer science, I was already thinking about using technology then which would allow easy archiving and searching. I was eager to see that coming.

So when digital camera came roaring in the early 2000, I bought my first Canon G2 and really enjoyed the benefits of it and satisfied my longing for digital archiving potential that has finally arrived. I never looked back.

I never looked back until 2 years ago upon learning that I still have a lot of things to work on and learn especially darkroom techniques. And I still need to be surprised and to remember that nostalgic sound of the shutter, the advancing of the film, and the moment of satisfaction upon seeing your prints. I need that discipline again same thing that young photographers definitely need that would make us all a better equipped photographers of our time.
