Art Black Out April 15th

The idea is that on April 15th - World Art Day - artists only post black images to draw awareness to something people take as given: a steady stream of visual content on their dashes. 

We are drawing attention to the ongoing issue of artists being disrespected and their art being stolen or reposted. Let's make people aware of what the Internet would look like if artists stopped making art because they get discouraged or too scared to post for fear of having their work stolen. 

For one day, let’s flood dashes everywhere with gaping black spaces where art is supposed to be. 

HOW TO JOIN:

On April 15th post completely black images everywhere, on whichever platform it pleases you, and tag them with #artblackout.

Inform yourself on the issue of art theft, reposting and giving credit and spread the word!

Art Blackout

@artblackout is raising awareness about the issues artists, including fandom artists, face on the internet. I’ven been posting my fanart online since 2006. I’ve experienced many disheartening things over the years. When fandom drags you down instead of appreciating the content you make available what’s the point in still sharing it?

Please be mindful of how you treat artists and the artwork they share with you.

since it is world art day (april 15th), i think we should all appreciate artists by NOT supporting reposters and reposter accounts. im fucking looking at you instagram.

if you cant respect artists, this is all you get and all you WILL get if you continue to let people repost art that is not theirs.

Be aware that all online content is made by someone. Respect artists. Pay them. Don't steal their art. Don't remove watermarks. Make sure the products you buy don't have stolen art.

Today's Steven is... wait a minute, where is he?!

The truth is, he's not here. He couldn't bear to show his art on a platform where so many artists routinely have their work stolen, reposted without their consent, and discredited. He used to be really proud of the work he put out, but not getting the credit he rightfully deserves has put a real toll on his confidence and passion for art, to the point where he's found it hopeless and simply stopped producing content.

This is a story told by all too many artists of every kind. The visual artists, the writers, the musicians, the editors, the photographers, the performers—all of them have been hurt over and over again by reposting and stealing. Some of these artists depend solely on their craft to get by and put food on the table, and countless lives have been damaged and endangered by having their art be thrown about without getting the recognition and support they deserve.

So they disappear. And more and more of us disappear, and what was once a vibrant and beautiful community of artists doing the things they love and fulfilling the most human of desires, the desire to create, slowly fades to black.

In a time where we are relying on artists now more than ever to hold on to our humanity, it's time to remember that they are human too. It's time to treat them with the respect and importance they have always deserved.

It's time to give credit to the artists.
