“Vincent Van Gogh, tra le tante stranezze, mangiava anche pittura gialla, direttamente dai tubetti che acquistava, perché credeva che il giallo avrebbe portato la felicità dentro di lui. Gli davano del pazzo, dello stupido a mangiare i colori, perché i colori erano tossici; per non parlare del fatto che mangiarli non aveva ovviamente nessuna influenza sulla felicità di una persona. Ma io non sono mai stata d'accordo. Sono sicura che se tu fossi così infelice da credere che persino l'idea più assurda potrebbe funzionare, come pitturarti le pareti interne degli organi di giallo, allora ci proveresti. Non è molto diverso dall'innamorarsi o dall'assumere droghe. C'è un gran rischio di ritrovarsi col cuore a pezzi o di morire per overdose, eppure le persone continuano a farlo ogni giorno. Lo fanno perché c'è quella possibilità, seppur minima, che questo migliori le cose. Ognuno ha la sua pittura gialla.”

Lost World

John Stezaker at Christchurch Art Gallery in New Zealand through 22 July 2018. Resolutely analogue in a digital era, Stezaker works with scalpel and glue, slicing images and joining them together in new configurations. Collage, he says, is about "stuff that has lost its immediate relationship with the world" and involves "a yearning for a lost world". He works from a vast personal archive of out-of-date images--mostly old film stills, vintage actor headshots and antique postcards. Curated by Robert Leonard, "Lost World" brings together forty collages dating from 2006 to 2016, as well as five poignant found-object-sculptures: a selection of antique mannequin hands, offering a repertoire of gestures. MORE
