This morning I've had a friendly discussion about, of all things, cartoons like tom&jerry, Donald duck and such, and realized something.
There were a lot of details in those short episodes, details that didn't really serve to further the story but were just put there for the sake of eliciting a laugh at the small silly absurdity (for example a Santa's elf painting a chess board with an already checkered paint). And I was marvelling at those people who came up with these little things, and realized that that's where the flair, the talent and creativity of the artists involved came through, in those little details that 'merely' enriched the experience of the consumers.
It obviously made me think of Arthur, right away, because he has such attention to details, but he builds those details in his dreams himself, and that's where his imagination finds its expression. Enriching the environment, making it either more realistic or more absurd, such as in case of his beloved paradoxes.
He's not an artist, and he doesn't have the same type of imagination as Eames does, but he can come up with wonderful things and twists within the bounds that have been already set, he just needs to know where his boundaries are first before being able to play with what he's got and bring little details and pieces of himself in.
