Despite mostly negative reviews, the film was MGM’s biggest success of the season, and was nominated for 7 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (Mervyn LeRoy), Best Actor (Ronald Colman), Best Supporting Actress (Susan Peters), Best Screenplay, Best Score (Herbert Stothart), and Best Art Direction - Black and White. It did not receive an Oscar.

The 1942 William Wyler directed film Mrs. Miniver, written by Arthur Wimperis, George Froeschel, James Hilton, and Claudine West, was adapted from a book written by Jan Struther. Mrs. Miniver, starring Greer Garson, Walter Pidgeon, and Teresa Wright, essentially served as a propaganda film to bolster British moral during the Second World War.
