I chose to depict the song "Words Fail" as it proved to be one of the most emotionally loaded scenes in the entire musical. I find situations in which there are no words that could express the severity of the event most dreadful. So, seeing a feeling like that portrayed so effectively in the musical really helped me relate to Evan and appreciate the performance more.

The track “Words Fail” inspired me the most to create this art because it was a song that I related most to. When Evan had trouble with making his words convey how he really felt, but found that as his biggest obstacle, it connected with me on a personal level because I, too, also struggle with that and think about it a lot as something I have to improve on for myself.

Upon viewing the show, I was very intrigued by the idea of being caught up in a very dangerous lie for your and for other people’s mental health. I chose to illustrate this concept through the Murphys’ perspective —  them seeing him as an idealized version of their dead son. Evan is barely seen in the spotlight he has been put in by the Murphys to show Evan as a person being completely ignored by the family. He Is seen as a replacement, and getting out of that light may be very dangerous to him and the family as well.

View the Everglades

The topic about wanting to be seen and life ending short inspired me to create this art work. Many people in life are not seen for their beauty and talents, leading to them to believe that they are not worth it and causing them to fall down the rabbit hole of depression and sometimes even suicide. Now in the 21st century, more people who are mainly of a younger age attempt suicide which doesn't allow them to see the beauties of the world. My art piece not only shows that everyone is seen, but also shows that there are things in the world that holds just as much beauty as the human life. I used the Everglades in my artwork because I believe that it is one of the most beautiful and inspirational places on earth. Like the trees in the Everglades, I believe that people can push through and adapt to tough times if they remain strong physically and mentally.

When I watched the play Dear Evan Hansen, there was a part of a song that made me think a lot. It was part of the song, “Waving Through a Window.” It made me think and wonder whether or not Evan fell off the tree on purpose or by accident. I realized how sad it could be when you’re not noticed, so I decided to do a blue background to express the sadness. I made a tree out of a collage and a person hanging on to represent Evan and his decision. I also used typography and the words I used were from the song. DEAR EVAN HANSEN made me realize what others could be going through.
