Cleverness is not the same as complexity, when the world on the page reflects and illuminates the messiness of real life. That sort of effect comes not from clever technique but from a deep exploration of characters and situations.

Initially, artist Madge Evers made prints out of mushroom spores to make sure "the mushrooms I had grown were not poisonous."

But she was fascinated by the resulting image. Now, she says, "I make spore prints for the beautiful and mystical stories they tell."
