Using tape, paper, and sculptural elements, Debra Weisberg explores the boundary of drawing. She recently created a 22-ft long installation, commissioned for the Facebook Cambridge Office.

“All of my work is rooted in drawing, which I define, following anthropologist Tim Ingold, as ‘an indelible record of the pressure of the fingers on the pencil that makes it, driven by impatience, control, or anxiety of the maker… an archive of the maker’s muscle.’ For me, the act of drawing is dynamic, improvisational, and mutable inside any installation.”

8 ‘Til Late

A new temporary installation by British artist Lucy Sparrow is filled from floor to ceiling with thousands of objects you might find at a typical corner store. However all the products are made from felt and a bit of paint and just like a real store, every last thing is for sale.

In this cultural moment, many of us are feeling inadequate to solve societal problems—fascism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, anti-Semitism, the list goes on—and are unsure of how individuals can affect real change. Casement’s list of ills had significant crossover with what we are facing now, notably racism and homophobia. From his letters, one clearly sees his feelings of inadequacy and futility, and part of the reason that he is so compelling a character is that we know he made a difference—with his writings in opposition to the enslavement of people in the Congo and Putumayo, with his agitating against colonial rule in Ireland, and with his heroic self as an alternative gay model to his contemporary Oscar Wilde—although the full extent of his influence, a hundred years on, has not yet been determined. Perhaps this ties in with negative capability, as Casement didn’t know what effect he would have, if any, and we, too, don’t know what effect we will have on the current political climate as we strive to effect change. All large historical decision draw from a sea of smaller decisions. One never knows what will make the difference in the long run.

Porcelain Sculptures by Juliette Clovis

French multidisciplinary artist Juliette Clovis, (born in Poitiers in 1978) works primarily with female busts, mutating the forms to adopt animal or floral-based characteristics. Using both the 2D application of paint, and a 3D addition of ceramics, she covers the females that she sculpts in horns, quills, and blooms. Her newest series of porcelain sculptures is centered around the form of an egg. Artist website.

Using themes of life and growth in nature, artist MyeongBeom Kim (b.1976) constructs stunning installations of surreal situations. His work often conveys a state of transition between two strange pairs, like he has stumbled upon bizarre metamorphoses frozen in time. Certain imagery is often repeated in Kim’s work, like deer, antlers, trees, and balloons.
