Exciting News! The Arts Area is proud to announce it is now a community partner with Create CA (California Alliance for Arts Education) and serves as the coordinating organization for Arts Now San Bernardino County in the advocacy of equitable access to arts education for all K-12 students. We believe that creativity and arts education are essential to building the society we all want to be a part of. From improved student engagement to increased academic achievement, the benefits of a creative education have profound and lasting impact on K-12 students. It's time for us to join together and demand that every student receive the quality arts education they deserve. California's Education code promises visual art, music, dance, theater and media arts classes for each K-12 student, but few schools are in compliance with this mandate. California Arts Education Data Project concludes that only 37% of San Bernardino County students participate in the arts, and that access is significantly lower in low-income schools. This finding confirms what most arts education advocates understand – that access to arts education is not equitable in California K-12 public schools. Where community resources support a complete education, the arts exist; where those resources are lacking due to economic disadvantage, the arts and its many benefits for students are marginalized. The Arts Area is pleased to welcome Ariana Mungia as the Program Director for Arts Now San Bernardino County.
