Thoughts on convention pricing
i wrote a whole thing on the topic of undercharged artwork but tumblr ate it :/ but basically since i started participating in more comic book related cons, I noticed the CRAZY difference in pricing and have just gained more of an awareness of the difference in clientele.
Western comic book convention go-ers --> more willing to spend money on an original piece of artwork, for the real collectors price is not as much of an issue and they go for quality. I have had some come back after receiving a sketch and ask to pay more for inking and color. They also tip, which amazed me because i'd never had that before. The crowd also tends to be older.
Full color piece for this crowd usually $60~$100 and up
Anime convention goers--> usually go for the cheap deals, and anything over $10 for them is expensive. I get a LOT of people turning their noses up at my coffin rings when they find out they are $10 each...My coffin rings are completely handmade from scratch and involve a lot of sanding, glossing and are cast from an original mold.
Full color art for this crowd on average: $15~$30 maybe more if they're 'famous'
Maybe the extreme differences in attitude has something to do with the anime crowd being younger, but i still dont think that's an excuse to de-value artwork because of your age. It also ties into the whole mindset that 'anime isn't real artwork' which i HATE hearing. All this and im seeing commission pricing on dA for painfully low prices. I really dont understand the mentality of $40 for full body, soft shade and $10 extra for another character??? Uhh drawing another character is just as much work as drawing the first one!! Maybe like a small discount, but less than half??
The easiest way i judge is by minimum wage. Over in Toronto it's $10/hr, so if a piece takes you 3 hours and you're charging $20... you may as well just go work at Burger King and you'd make more. (Plus free burgers, cool.) Also you'd stop hurting other artists who are actually trying to make ends meet by charging fairly for their artwork.
Do not charge according to your self esteem. Trust your ability, trust the hard work, time and practice that you've put into your skill. It is up to us. We can change this massive epidemic and teach younger generations to value our work! Please.
