“Every artist develops their own palette of preferred colours, but to arrive at this selection requires knowledge of not only the available colours, but how colours work with each other to produce successful mixes.

Colour Mixing is every bit as important in making a composition work as thumbnails and perspective. With colour control you can communicate with your viewer, tell a story or evoke a mood – hence the phrase ‘to paint a picture’.

You would not be alone in thinking that colour mixing is a daunting prospect; every artist has been through this at some point – even professional artists such as myself. I guarantee however that it needn’t be so – for colour mixing is actually about some basic and simple principles.”

PAUL STARTS OFF by reprising the basics of working with a core palette of six colours and how a limitless array of colour mixes can be achieved through exploiting primary, secondary, and complementary colour mixing. He reprises the essentials that will govern a required colour mix, explaining what to look for and how to achieve it.

PAUL THEN DEMONSTRATES HOW TO MIX THE VARIATIONS REQUIRED FOR ACHIEVING ‘RED’ METALS – showing how to identify the colours that make up the ‘local’ mix; gradually moving through the various mixes achieved through the use of complementaries – all of which are filmed in real-time, so that you can see the exact mixes as he makes them, before they are shown alongside each other in a progressive series of painted squares. He explains how the mixes can go wrong and what to do to correct them.

THIS PROCESS IS THEN REPEATED FOR EACH OF ‘WHITE’ METALS AND ‘YELLOW’ METALS – accompanied by Paul’s detailed demonstrations and running commentary.

The experience of painting in watercolours can vary considerably. There are the three principal techniques for instance – Wet on Wet : Wet on Dry and Line & Wash. Each of which can be exploited. Any of which can be combined. All of which can be developed by you to achieve your own individual and personal style.

TECHNIQUE – for this series [2] Artist & Author Paul Taggart shows you how to exploit the Wet on Wet technique in Watercolours through his start-to-finish, step-by-step demonstration. The traditional watercolour painting technique of working from light to dark forms the basis of this project.

Having exposed the protected watercolour underpainting in Lesson 9, Paul now opens LESSON 10 by showing how to exploit that underpainting, turning to his soft pastels to work through from dark to light.

Although the setting sun is a dramatic element within this composition, the foreground is equally strong and important; acting as a frame to draw the viewer’s eye.

So it is that work continues on the wooden uprights that used to carry the ferry slipway on this Scottish loch. Dark and imposing they may appear, but as you will discover through Paul’s eyes, they need to be carefully worked to bring out their dark recesses, weather-worn textures and colours. Watch how a couple of well-placed blues enliven the deepest recesses, whilst subsequently overpainted splashes of red act as superb counterfoils; not to mention how Paul manipulates counterchange to maximimum effect. Final slashes of warm lights help to bring these wooden stancheons to life, picked out as they are by the setting sun.

Developing the painting in a balanced way is essential, so Paul now turns to the foreground stony beach, bringing this up to the same stage.

Finally in this lesson, you are shown how to introduce clouds into the distant sky; firstly dabbing them through with a kneadable putty eraser, before turning to a single yellow to render a sun-yellow halo around each – a rich and enlivening addition to the overall composition.

AS USUAL THESE LESSONS ARE FILMED IN REAL-TIME so that you can follow every stroke, every blend, every surface colour mix, every technique, hint and tip and everything that comes through as Artist & Author Paul Taggart works and provides a running commentary.

You will learn much about how to exploit pastel strokes as you would a brush; how to manipulate the paper wiper as if blending and softening with a brush; how the underlying paint layer continues to influence the subsequently laid pastel colours and how it works in providing those dark accents and complementary foils.

'Lesson 9 - [Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Acrylics with Paul Taggart’

The method and technique used by Artist & Author Paul Taggart in this Series is EQUALLY SUITABLE FOR WORKING IN OILS – building up the impasto layers with acrylics and texture paste, over which you can subsequently apply layers of oil paints, glazes and tints. Perfect for those who wish to work quickly and dynamically, as this method speeds up drying time.

Lesson 9 is full of energy, with rhythmic strokes being applied to suggest form and structure of the many and varied plants and grasses that make up the background against which the rooster emerges. This is not about detail, it is about exploiting the colour mixes, varying strengths of paint mixes and working one single brush to its fullest extent.

Thus far there has been no blending in this composition and so that method continues; for in this series Paul is relying solely on the paint mixes, texture, colour mixing and brush-strokes to achieve everything he needs to portray the subject in as suggestive a manner as possible.

Colour mixing is not only achieved on the palette, but on the surface – relying on the use of complementary colours, variable colour temperatures and the juxtaposition of colours to excite the eye.

Paul works with transparent colour mixes for the initial middle values of green and as colours are lightened, they then naturally become more opaque.

You will find Lesson 9 invaluable on many levels, not least in working with greens and how they are affected by reflected lights and sunlight.

Lesson 3 – '[Series 4] ‘Learn to Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart

YOU NOW JOIN Artist & Author Paul Taggart on LESSON 3 as work is completed on the PREPARATORY STUDY of a pineapple in a ceramic dish; the purpose of which is to bring together the different characteristics of masking fluid and candle wax, not only to achieve texture, but also, to help control the nature of your colours in the three layers. For this you are using Paul’s ‘combination technique’ – which is covered in Series 3 of ‘Learn to Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart’ – https://vimeo.com/ondemand/ltewatercolourseries3

This is the third layer, in which you will be using the Wet on Dry technique to complete the painting; where brush-strokes are sharp-edged, unless softened and/or ‘lost’ with a second brush.Within this second layer you will learn about working through the darks to the darkest accents, the colour mixes involved and where to generate focus through the strokes that you will now be applying.

You will see exactly how the candle wax reacts to subsequent paint layers, how it provides texture and interesting results within the applied paint. Wax can either repel paint mixes altogether or be worked into for interesting effects.

This is where you are in control of exactly how much light and shadows play against each other, through the way that you handle colour mixes and wield your brush-strokes.

Learning how to accommodate ‘matters that seem to be out of your control’ is well learnt in this lesson, as Paul encourages you to “work with” the way that those wax resists behave on the surface, rather than be intimidated by something that you may feel could be challenging. Paul hopes to demonstrate through these tutorials that random results can be exploited.

Soft Pastels are a medium that foxes many – for this purest of pigmented mediums is often overlooked in favour of working with wet paints and that is such a shame as it is rich and vibrant and can be worked much like paint.

Paul continues to work with a dark underpainting layer – demonstrated here in Watercolours, this could just as equally have been applied in Acrylics, Gouache or any other water-based paint.

AS USUAL THIS SET OF LESSONS IS FILMED IN REAL-TIME so that you can follow every stroke, every colour mix, every surface colour mix, every technique, hint and tip and all those that come through as Paul works and narrates.

STAGE ONE – MAPPING OUT THE COMPOSITION and DRAWING IN THE ELEMENTS Paul kicks off this lesson by going through a variety of thumbnails, his thinking behind them and his final decision. Moving to his stretched piece of pastel paper and working with a brush pen, he now transfers the main elements of the composition, sketching in the skeleton of the elements with water-proof ink that will take the subsequent layer of watercolour.

STAGE TWO – PREPARING THE UNDERPAINTING LAYER Switching to his basic Watercolour Painting kit – Paul now blocks in the main elements of the composition as a complementary underpainting – which will provide the dark intense foil for subsequently applied pastel layers. You will hear Paul say that to paint light you have to have darks – which is the purpose of this layer.

STAGE THREE – REDRAWING Returning to the painting Paul now sees this through fresh eyes and notes that the blocking in of main elements has thrown up certain issues; which for him need to be corrected. He returns to his brush pen and proceeds to make these changes; which in of themelves allow him the opportunity to share his compositional rationale. Now he is ready to proceed with the first layer of soft pastels.

You will learn much about light, about complementary colours and mixing coloured greys, about texture, about strokes, not to mention many, many more tips and hints – explained in detail through Paul’s running commentary; which means you will learn much from this lesson alone, not to mention those that follow.

“Welcome to our Highland studio and this Masterworks reveal in which we introduce my suite of four oil paintings, inspired by our day spent at an impromptu Bonspiel in 2009 (a curling get-together).

METHOD & TECHNIQUE – each figure-packed painting was worked in ‘miniature’ style, varying in size, from what we term a Grande Miniature, down to something a lot smaller; each composition based on different criteria. These are paintings filled with light – the whole spectrum of light – offered by the low-lying sun of this Mid-Winter day.

As you will note in this reveal, the traditional techniques I employ in my oil paintings involve a succession of layers. With each layer the overall colour and balance across the entire painting is refined, in order that I can achieve the impression of space and light which I am aiming for. Layering is essential – it allows the initial build-up of texture through to the finer layers of glazes and tints. Not only this, it allows the gradual build-up of colours, from dark to light and the finishing touches of absolute highlights.

There is absolutely no rushing this process, it requires meticulous attention and considerable patience; for the paint surface must be discovered and explored – it cannot be contrived.

This is what makes painting particularly exciting for me and especially so in using traditional techniques. The result is almost inevitably a discovery, an unexpected delight that can be exploited and it is this element of the unexpected that drives me to push the limits of my work.

SUBJECT – in the first year of our relocation to the Northern Highlands of Scotland and along with the rest of the UK, we were gripped by the unfolding excitement of a little-known sport that was being revealed at the 2002 Winter Olympics, that being the long-established sport of Curling – resulting in a Gold medal won by the British team.

The term ‘curling’ comes from the curl of the stone as it slides across the ice and although around for at least 500 years; the sport itself had only returned to the Olympics four years earlier, after a break of some 70 years.

The term Bonspiel describes the gathering of clans or alliances in a tournament and mostly these are now held indoors, or on specially constructed outdoor rinks. As such, an outdoor Bonspiel is now becoming an even rarer sight and is precisely what we had resigned ourselves to. For although a subject on the list of paintings to include in my ‘Spirit of the Highlands’ collection, we had all but given up any hope of chronicling such an event – that is, until in the last days of 2008, upon overhearing a chance remark from one of the local curlers at a social gathering.

Which is how, a couple of days later (the first days of 2009), we found ourselves invited to witness an outdoor Bonspiel on one of the frozen fields of Morvich farm, in Sutherland, where members from a number of clubs were busily clearing the snow and preparing the ice for their required sheets (the playing area).

As you can imagine, we were delighted to have been asked along and this suite of paintings is the result of that day’s event.
