I went and collected some from the local river. And found out that it could be used to make all kinds of useful things in my garden. trellises, arbors,a tiki hut! Its an awesome material to play with. And its free ,and Earth friendly.

Arundo donax known by the common name of Spanish Cane. This could easily be mistaken for a bamboo of some kind but it is in fact a very sizeable grass. The variegated form is particularly attractive and in the garden we have both the striped form that I originally got from Dixter and the plain green species without the variegated leaves that seems to be more robust with us. Great for winter structure as well as adding some serious vertical interest in the borders where it zooms ever skyward. Very hardy and capable of growing in a range of soil depths.
