Random thought, but is anyone else ever occasionally overwhelmed by how permanent modern record is?  I wonder if people from younger generations really have a sense of that the way I do.  I mean, I’m 38, so most of my childhood was unplugged in terms of social internet activity.  But now, everything is titled, tagged, and filed away where it can be found by anyone at any time. 

Most of the things I did as a teenager?  I don’t remember, and neither does anyone else, because we didn’t live online.  But my kids?  Everything they do is potential social media fodder, whether it be from their own devices, or from the devices of their friends. That stupid thing you did or said when you were thirteen, that nobody remembers?  Well, today, everyone remembers it, and just in case they didn’t, Facebook will pull it up as a memory.  Permanent record.

The consequences of giving voice to a passing thought that hasn’t been carefully vetted first are massive nowadays!  I have said some things in the past, in a heated moment, and later wished I hadn’t, or wished I had phrased things more carefully, or less hurtfully, or maybe picked my moments better, or whatever.  But that’s always been on a small scale--never really involving more than a comparatively small group of people, and is therefore easier to manage.  But if you do that now, online, or on camera, or whatever--you might be paying consequences the rest of your life.  For one stupid comment that you maybe didn’t even mean the way it was taken.

Everyone makes mistakes online, and everyone has bad days, but I think some of us are more aware of the permanence of social media posts than others.  And I admit to having a lot of apprehension about the consequences of online living for my kid’s generation, because they haven’t watched the social media snowball grow from snowflake to avalanche like I have.

None of this is meant to sound like I think less of younger generations--I hope to god you don’t take it that way.  I believe human beings are very adaptable, and we’ll figure it out as we go, just like we always have.  And each generation will bring something and take something away that no other generation can own.  I just recognize the potential for self destruction, and I very much hope I can help my kids understand that and stay safe online.
