In regards to Asanoha's combat skill, she was never officially trained. And what I mean by officially, is that she never went to an academy and she was never registered as a shinobi of any village for that matter. During her early years, she was essentially a normal civilian until she accidentally unlocked the ability to use Hyoton around the age of ten. She wasn't even sure how she had even done it, and it took awhile for her to be able to use it at will during the time she was alone and a street urchin. She did not have any basic fundamentals on chakra control, ninjutsu, genjutsu, taijutsu, etc etc. So a lot of the time, she overdid things when using her kekkei genkai.
It wasn't until a years later that she started getting something that was considered proper training, mostly from her distant cousin, Haku, someone who understood a bit better how Hyoton actually worked.
Even now, Asanoha is not exactly the strongest "shinobi", but she's not easily taken out either. Once she started being trained on the necessities, Asanoha actually became quite intrigued by the idea of Genjutsu. It's something she's more adept at doing over taijutsu.
