About Asa
There was no shortage of company for Asa, so when he noticed Lacey walking the halls by herself he couldn't understand why. Her face was always hidden behind her hair and oversized glasses, from a distance he supposed she could be a hard read. Asa decided he was going to talk to her. She's still a girl and he knows girls. No one was pressuring him to approach her. No childish bets were made. Asa admitted that he thought she was cute for someone who seemed to try their best to stay in the background. In his mind, Lacey was like a hidden gem. Like those spots in town that are relatively unknown but happen to have the best chicken strips. Whatever. Then they met, and it was a disaster (on his part). Everything was moving along smoothly, he had the perfect set up to give her a quick kiss, but he bailed at the last moment. He was nervous. He was genuinely nervous, and he rarely gets nervous about anything. He even used a fake phone message as an excuse to leave. Looking back, Asa realized he felt ashamed that day. In school, Asa would go out of his way to chat with Lacey if he saw her, and off campus he was back to his usual habits taking comfort in the arms of people he didn't care to know. Eventually, he started to actively look for her: in the halls, the library, the cafeteria, the P.E. Building, clubrooms... She was addicting, and one of the few people he enjoyed talking to. Now, Asa talks a lot. Michelle and Fiske have to tell him to shut up sometimes, but his words were often hollow and the topic of conversation was meaningless. He didn't give Lacey any of that. He couldn't give her any of that. For a while, Asa wanted to get Lacey out of her zone and introduce her to his “friends”. It wasn't long before he realized there weren't many friends at all, and the few he did have... well, he wasn't ready for them to get to know her.
more to come...
