spill on the jane and hair theory
you have no idea how long i waited to get a message like this, thank you!!!
ok so i think there are two aspects to this topic, i’m gonna start with jane and his “type”, jane has a thing for brunette women, which is really obvious (the only exception is kristina frye, but i think that’s because she had reddish hair which had a deeper meaning for the whole red john story line). apart from her we have:
erica flynn
jane keeps denying that he’s attracted to her, but i think that’s a lie. they kiss in war of the roses (she initiates it, but still), there’s definitely (sexual?) tension between them in both every rose has its thorn and orange blossom ice cream, and lisbon is VERY jealous of her from the beginning (like that scene in every rose has its thorn where she gets into the car with jane and erica, it’s just so funny)
lorelei martins
okay there’s more than sexual tension between lorelei and jane, i mean they do have sex (and she’s the first woman after the death of his wife he has sex with, i’m not sure how i feel about that). i get the feeling jane likes lorelei a lot, and he tries to get to know here beyond her connection to red john, especially in red sails in the sunset. again, lisbon is VERY jealous of lorelei, but there’s another aspect to it, because as soon as lorelei dyes her hair blonde in red sails in the sunset, jane just kinda loses interest? you can see it in his eyes and his body language, and i think it’s a really clever choice of acting, but more on that later
kim fisher
and that brings us right up to my blue heaven and kim fisher. fisher is the first woman jane takes off his wedding ring for (again, i’m not sure how i feel about that). she’s the first woman we see him show any interest in after red john is gone. they go on a date, they DANCE, it’s all about jane trying to start a new (normal) life post red john. and, once more lisbon is jealous of fisher (the way she says “kim????” is equally funny as her getting in the car with jane and lorelei)
krystal markham
ok so i wanted to add her not because jane has a thing for her (he doesn’t), but because his (faked) interest in her confuses everyone around him. she’s blonde??? and both fisher and lisbon are like, “she’s not even his type???” so the people (women) around him know exactly what his type is (brunette women)!!! and they’re very confused when he starts dating a blonde woman
teresa lisbon
now it’s time to talk about lisbon. the romantic in me likes to think jane’s only ever interested in brunette women because he’s in love with lisbon (similar to will in the good wife only dating women with the exact same hairstyle as alicia), but, sadly, i think it’s the other way around :( on a very superficial level, he’s attracted to her because she’s brunette, but hair also seems to be important to jane beyond that, he touches lisbon’s hair quite often before they’re a couple and after they get together, he almost always touches it when they’re kissing, he’s definitely into lisbon’s hair
which brings me to the second aspect of the whole (blonde/brunette) hair thing in the mentalist, which is that hair is also important in at least three out of the five episodes simon baker directed (i wasn’t yet paying attention to it when i watched red moon, i should definitely rewatch it, and it’s not really in my blue heaven, which is probably one of the reasons why it’s my least favourite episodes out of the five of them)
blinking red light
there’s a scene right at the beginning of the episode where lisbon goes to confront richard haibach and her hair is open when she gets out of the car and while she walks to the front door she puts it up in a bun, which she NEVER does on screen, this is the only instance in all 151 episodes we see lisbon change her hairstyle on screen (it’s small things like this that make me love this episode so much)
red sails in the sunset
again, lisbon touches her hair in this episode to fix it a bit, which she NEVER does, and, again, it’s right at the beginning when she sees kirkland in her office and fixes her hair before she goes in to see him, like she sees him and thinks “oh, there’s an attractive homeland security agent in my office, let me just quickly run my hand through my hair” and she also smiles kinda flirty when she does it??? and then the whole brunette/blonde thing with lorelei which i already mentioned above, but thinking about how simon baker directed the episode makes it even funnier, as soon as lorelei is blonde, jane is like, “welp, there go my feelings for her i guess”, and, on like a purely narrative level, this is about disguising yourself by changing the colour of your hair, which becomes important again in
the silver briefcase
where a woman dresses up as another woman by putting on a blonde wig, which is an important plot point and the reason why the bad guys were able to fool the police initially. it somehow ends up being about hair again. sadly, lisbon doesn’t do anything to her hair in that episode, but she holds jane’s hand, so i’m ok with that
anyway, i didn’t mention the hair colour of simon baker’s wife on purpose because i think he’s able to distinguish between a character he plays and himself, but jane’s type definitely is brunette women and i think it’s funny how hair is important in the episodes simon baker directed
i hope this all makes sense ...
re: the fandom and bringing it back to us - i have felt the same way. bear in mind i’ve only received one ask about copaganda (and it was about the mentalist not b99 lol) but i find it bizarre this constant emphasis on what is propaganda and not regarding fictional television shows rather than focusing on the tangible, real brutality that is happening rn. and this isn’t a direct at you!!! or really everyone. i understand the b99 debate ... but why are we talking about the fictional so much?
right. the only reason b99 is so “woke” is because of the corrupt police system irl, so shouldn’t we fix that first?
a podcast between toby, donna, josh, and cj when j/d are a couple would be half politics and half josh and donna romantically bickering much to toby's chagrin
it’s a staple for every episode that u hear a soft thud that’s just toby hitting his head on the table

15. favourite episode based on comedy alone? 48 HOURS
19. what is the healthiest quality about amy & jake’s relationship? They genuinely are better together and they try to be better for the other. They support each other through everything, they embrace the dorkiness of the other - like Amy pretending to like die hard for years or jake taking her to that barrel museum- because they know it’s important to the other.
21. favourite season? explain why. Season 1. There’s something that feels different (at least for me) about season one. I find it more fun, a little bit more realistic and I LOOOVE the way they made it very obvious from the start that jake and Amy had a thing for each other.
