Reynolds also has opinions about “Chicagoland,” CNN’s eight-part series debuting tonight that features the fight against public school closings which shone a light on her orating son and led CNN camera crews to follow their family around on and off for months. She’s excited and hopeful, although after watching an early screening of the first episode Tuesday along with friends who were also included in the film, she’s skeptical. I think it’s staying pretty lukewarm, from what I found in the first episode,” she said Thursday afternoon. “It seems like it’s going to tell both sides of the story but stay middle-ground.
Asean Johnson's mom, Shoenice Reynolds, give her opinion of Chicagoland. I think she's trying to be critical of the series' perspective but IMHO isn't that what this documentary treatment of Chicago is supposed to accomplish? [via The Chicago Tribune]
Happy first day of school, Chicago
Chicago Public Schools and schools all around the country are now open for classes!! Unfortunately, schools here and all around the country are also being closed by city governments due to insufficient budgets. Hear 9-year-old Asean Johnson of Chicago speak at the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington about school equality, education and justice.
My hero, 9-year-old Asean Johnson, brought to tears during his speech to the Chicago Board of Education. He brought me to tears because he has so much strength and courage, but no one will listen. Please hear his words, his cry for help. I hope they move you as well. Transcript (to the best of my ability): Crowd chanting: LET HIM SPEAK! LET HIM SPEAK! Asean: First, I would like to thank you for giving us iPads [laughter], but that is still not enough. We have lost over 3,000 teachers, who have-- you cut in the budget cuts. And first of all, one thing that I don’t like about this board is that you only give us 2 minutes to speak but you give all these corporate businesses, what like, an hour to speak?! [applause] Secondly, you are SLASHING our education. You are pulling it down. You are taking our educational opportunities away. Let--let the community talk, let the students talk, let the parents talk, let the teachers talk. Let them control the schools--let--don’t let the bank control this board. I know that you are (unintelligible) you put all our TIF dollars into--you put all our TIF dollars into (unintelligible) for what? Can’t you put that back into the schools? You are--you are saying it’s all about the kids, but you’re not (unintelligible) about the kids. But I am a student myself and I am pleading and begging that you help these parents and help low-income. Help them out and give them what they need. Help them with these schools. PLEASE. HELP. THEM. You just need to go to that mayor and tell him to just quit his job. [applause] Please tell him he is tearing down our education. BOE member: Asean, excuse me, can you please conclude? [Silence as he chokes back tears.] Asean: Something is wrong with this [unintelligible]. Something is wrong.
i met this little badass in chicago this weekend. he shook my hand. when i grow up, i want to be asean johnson.
Asean Johnson at 9 years old having realization on the corruption of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel shutting down schools. He volunteered to do a speech at a protest to help save his Elementary School. I admire his passion and informative importance for education at his age.
"If you take a school down, you're going to build another prison... listen to your conscious.." - Asean Johnson on Ed Show.

9 year old boy going OFF about the recent closing of dozens of Chicago public schools.
I think this is the future mayor of Chicago.
Why is a 9-year-old boy brave enough to speak about the issues in his hometown but Obama can't?
I know Obama isn't the president of Black America and we expect him to keep hush-hush on state issues, but come on dude. Your former Chief of Staff is the mayor of Chi-town and it ain't like you're gonna get re-elected again.
You can speak on Sandy Hook but you can't speak on the kids in ur backyard being held back?
Or am I just expecting too much?
