Prompt: Saccharine lies
The day had been filled with missions and battles for the monster duo residing just outside of the village. Aseii, the demon of fire and lightning, and Neeko, whose fury and claws were said to slice cleanly through whatever stood in his path, made it a challenge to see how many rescue missions they could accomplish in one day. It started out simple enough, some kids had gotten lost in the mountains and needed finding. Then a father needed help gathering wood for his family. After that there was a group of construction workers who had gotten trapped beneath a fallen building that they were working on. Sure, the last one had some expenses incurred for damages, but Neeko assured them that slicing through their materials was the only way to save them. This continued from early in the morning until long after the sun had set. By the time the pair of them had returned home they were exhausted and Aseii actually ended up collapsing on the floor after getting past the door.
“Hey, get up ya lazy fuck,” Neeko muttered as he moved for the couch. Aseii said nothing and just continued to lay there, his breath silent and shallow. Neeko’s brow furrowed and he nudged Aseii with his foot, telling him a second time to get up. Aseii groaned and managed to push himself up to a sitting position.
“What, today too much for yer old ass?” Neeko laughed but Aseii didn’t retaliate like he normally would. Instead he just snorted and a bit of smoke escaped his nostrils. He didn’t say a word as he shuffled to his usual sleeping spot.
“Hey,” Neeko spoke up, noticing that the fire on the tip of Aseii’s tail had started to flicker and dim. “You okay?”
“I’ll be fine,” Aseii muttered. He lay down on the floor and wrapped his tail around his body. “Just tired. See you in the morning.”
Neeko eyed his “friend” as Aseii’s eyes closed and he drifted off to sleep. Neeko shrugged and flopped onto the couch, falling asleep almost immediately. He didn’t wake up for hours, long after the sun had come up. A beam of light hit his eye and he moaned his annoyance at the daytime.
“We gotta get some fuckin’ curtains or somethin,” he said as he rolled over. “Hey ‘seii, you hungry or did ya eat already?”
No response.
“You still sleeping, old man,” Neeko chuckled and pushed up against the couch to get a look around. Lazy sonnuvabitch must still be worn from the day before. “Hey, wake up.”
Still nothing.
Neeko sighed and got off the couch. He walked over to Aseii and kicked him hard in the side. Aseii rolled over and Neeko’s eye widened in fear. The fire on Aseii’s tail had gone out.
