Prior to taking the leap of faith and going all in with the brand, Liu started with a camera strap as his first product and worked out of his apartment, while maintaining a full-time job. These humble beginnings would lay the foundation for the company, which would him lead to eventually opening an office and warehouse before finally leaving his desk job. Five years after conception, the first retail location opened in San Francisco’s emerging Mission District. Two years later, DSPTCH opened a location in New York and a third location and their first international store in Tokyo.
With a few exceptions, most of this year’s experiences are filed neatly into the simple chapters of work, family, projects and fun, not necessarily in that order. Our oldest son’s wedding is a favorite memory of mine from this year.
Putting aside the eventual outcome of those efforts, I’m concerned about what this will do to our increasingly fractured societal landscape. If you think elections have been spectacles in the past, hold onto your hat for this one! I wonder how much more stress the temperament of our country can stand before something, or someone snaps and we witness significant upheaval and conflict in the streets. If it happens, would it be concentrated in the urban centers, as has typically been the case in the past, or will this result in skirmishes that affect even medium and small towns?
When it comes to fire, my rule of the “7 Ps” stands true more than ever—and that is, “Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss-Poor Performance.” The worst situation you can find yourself in when it comes to firecraft is having no available combustion-enhancing devices and having to try to use manual friction, such as rubbing two sticks together, to eventually make an ember you can finesse into a flame. That said, if you do find yourself in this dire situation, technique and proper materials will certainly make the difference between frustrating failure and triumphantly warm success.
